Vestal, N.Y. - The Great Danes continue to roll after their 3-1 victory over Rider on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Bearcats Sports Complex in game one of the Binghamton Classic. UAlbany has now won three straight matches this season. The last time the Great Danes won three straight was back in Oct. 2008. Junior forward Quintel Gates continues his personal goal and point streak at four games.
The second half of the match was all UAlbany as senior midfield Anthony DeSalvo began the charge with the equalizer in the 54th minute. The equalizing goal was his first of the season and a momentum swing for the Great Danes. "We had played a bad first half and were looking to improve on the second half with just tying the game and going from there", said DeSalvo on his equalizing goal. "(Quintel) Gates was heavily covered in the corner, but was able to volley a great pass in the box for me to head into the net on the far post to tie the game at one".
After UAlbany (3-2) was able to tie the game at one, junior midfielder Jeff Pierre added on to the lead in the 76th minute from teammate junior forward David Hawksworth.
To cap off the match, junior forward Quintel Gates was able to tally the Great Danes third goal in the 87th minute on a penalty kick. The goal was Gate's fifth and 10th point on the season. The Bay Shore, N.Y. native now has netted a goal in four consecutive games.
The first half of the match was controlled by Rider as it led 4-2 in shots. The Broncs struck first in the 5th minute with junior midfielder Brenden Noesges shot from five yards out after a pass from teammate junior forward Ryan Fitzgerald to put Rider up 1-0.
UAlbany was able to lead in shots, 12-8, while Rider led in corners, 6-4. The Great Dane's senior goalkeeper Adrian Foncette and Rider's junior goalkeeper Jason Giordano had three saves a piece.
The Great Danes finish off the Binghamton Classic on Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Central Connecticut State at 12 pm at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
