University of Albany Field Hockey Capitlizes With 3-1 Victory Over VCU - UAlbany Sports 2011


Evanston, Ill. - University at Albany take their second victory on the season with a 3-1 score over Virgina Commonwealth University in a neutral site, non-conference game held in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday afternoon.

The Great Danes (2-1) prevailed on their penalty corners as two of the three tallies came from attempts. The first goal came at the 15 minute mark when Christina Patrick finished off a corner with assists from Karlijn van Dijsseldonk and Corrine McConville. The second penalty corner goal would come in the second stanza when Nina Walters deflected a shot from Daphne Voormolen, giving her an assist, to make the game 3-0 in UAlbany's favor. Van Dijsseldonk also notched her second assist in the match with Walters goal.

Graduate student Katharina Helling registered her first goal as a Great Dane near the 28 minute mark in the first half with rebound off a corner shot.

The Rams (1-3), trailing 3-0, gained momentum late in the final minute of play when they registered their first penalty corner of the game. Kelsey Scherrer blasted a shot in between the pipes with assists from Stephanie DeMassi and Kendell Combs, which would finalize all scoring. Combs ended the match with four shots.

Playing in all 70 minutes, UAlbany goalkeeper, Kristi Troch made two saves in her second win of the season. For the Rams, Erin Jablonski made seven saves in the loss. UAlbany led in penalty corner attempts with a 12-1 advantage and out shot VCU 18-6.

The Great Danes will return to action tomorrow afternoon facing Northwestern in a non-conference match for a 2:00 p.m. start time in Evanston, Illinois.
