UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY WOMEN'S LACROSSE: EMMA POWLIN SELECTED IN UWLX DRAFT - UALBANY SPORTS 2017


BOSTON, Mass. – University at Albany senior midfielder Emma Powlin was selected by the Boston Storm in the United Women’s Lacrosse League College Draft on Wednesday.

The Penfield, N.Y., native was chosen in the eighth round (30th overall). She was one of 60 college athletes taken in the draft to play in the 2018 season. 

Powlin was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team as a junior after compiling 28 goals and 47 assists. She was was ninth in Division I and second in the league with 2.61 assists per game.

Founded in 2016, the Boston-based United Women’s Lacrosse League includes four teams: Boston, the Baltimore Ride, the Long Island Sound and the Philadelphia Force. It’s the world’s first professional women’s lacrosse league. UAlbany Sports Information

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY MEN'S BASKETBALL VAULTS TO #5 IN NATIONAL MID-MAJOR RANKINGS - UALBANY SPORTS 2017


ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s basketball team has risen to #5 in the CollegeInsider.com
Mid-Major Rankings, announced on Monday night.

UAlbany rises three spots from #8 last week. It is the second consecutive week UAlbany has been in the top-10.  UAlbany stands as the highest, and only, ranked mid-major men’s basketball team in the state of New York.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY MEN'S BASKETBALL: JOE CREMO SCORES 1000TH POINT - UALBANY SPORTS 2017


Joe Cremo earned a career-high 30 points, earning his 1,000th with 1:04 left in the 2nd. He now stands with 1,001 career points. He shot 10-for-17 from the field, including 7-for-10 from three, plus five assists. Travis Charles shot 7-for-9 with 15 points and four boards while David Nichols notched 12 points, six assists, three steals and five rebounds.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY FOOTBALL - FIVE GREAT DANES NAMED TO ALL-CAA TEAMS - UALBANY SPORTS 2017


ALBANY, N.Y. – First-team defensive lineman Malachi Hoskins led a list of five University at Albany football student-athletes who were named to All-Colonial Athletic Association teams, the league announced Tuesday.

 Fullback/tight end Anthony Manzo-Lewis, punt-returner Donovan McDonald and linebacker Nate Hatalsky all were named to the second-team, and linebacker Eli Mencer made the third-team as a special-teams member.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY MEN'S LACROSSE ALUM ERIC CANTOR NAMED TO TEAM ISRAEL FOR 2018 WORLD GAMES


NETANYA, ISRAEL – UAlbany men’s lacrosse alum Eric Cantor will suit up for Team Israel for the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Games this July.

Cantor graduated from UAlbany in 2015, serving as an LSM. He played 59 games for the Great Danes from 2012-15, finishing with 85 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers, six goals and five assists in his career, earning 2015 America East All-Conference First Team honors.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY CAA FOOTBALL'S DEFENSE DOMINATES IN WIN OVER NEW HAMPSHIRE - 2017 UALBANY SPORTS

Location: Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y.

 Records: UAlbany (4-7, 2-6 Colonial Athletic Association); New Hampshire (7-4, 5-3 CAA)

 Short story: A dominating defensive performance delivered the University at Albany football team a 15-0 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday in the Great Danes’ season finale. 

Key stats
 UAlbany’s defense limited New Hampshire to just 122 total yards, including -11 yards rushing.

The Wildcats managed only 10 first downs against a Great Danes defense that produced eight sacks and forced four fumbles, two of which were recovered by UAlbany.

Great Danes quarterback Will Brunson completed 14-of-24 passes for 184 yards. He tossed a 54-yard touchdown pass to Austin Ellis, who scored his first collegiate TD.

UAlbany linebacker Nate Hatalsky recorded nine tackles in his final college game. He ends the season as the CAA’s leader with 122 tackles.

Short Story: After a scoreless 110 minutes, UAlbany advanced past Maryland in the eighth round of penalty kicks behind Danny Vitiello and Brynjar Steinþórsson.

 Coach Gorman: “We’re delighted to be advancing to play another game. You get into these knockout-style tournaments and it’s all about advancing. Every game is going to be different. We knew today was going to be a tremendous challenge playing a program like Maryland. I thought they were very good tonight, but I’m proud of my guys. We executed a lot of things well and ultimately we’re happy to be on the right end of that shootout.”

Men’s Basketball Score: UAlbany 88, Boston University 74

 Short Story: Down by two at the half, the UAlbany men’s basketball team outscored its opponent 50-34 in the second period to earn an 88-74 road victory over Boston University on Monday night.

 Key Stats:

 UAlbany: Five Great Danes notched double digit points, led by David Nichols with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Travis Charles tied a career-high 16 points off 7-for-10 shooting, adding five rebounds, while Greig Stire notched 14 points and four boards.

Boston University: Nick Havener was BU’s leading scorer with 19 points, adding three blocks and five rebounds. Destin Barnes had 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Tonight’s contest was the 500th game for Will Brown as UAlbany head coach. UAlbany finished with 56 points in the paint, shooting 57.1% from the field, and 21 points off the free throw line. The Great Danes outrebounded BU 38-27.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY MEN'S SOCCER WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE AMERICA EAST TITLE - UALBANY SPORTS 2017

 Short Story: UAlbany wins its second consecutive America East title, dispatching UMass Lowell on the road in double-overtime.

 Coach Gorman: We just kept going as the season’s gone on. We know we have a lot of experience from last postseason. This year we had to go on the road a couple of times, and this conference is one of the best in the country. I thought that was a really good soccer game today between two NCAA tournament teams. I’m so proud of the way our guys kept playing in a hostile environment. We controlled a lot of the game and created chances towards the end, and the goal was spectacular.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY MEN'S BASKETBALL: DAVID NICHOLS NAMED TO 2017-18 LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST - UALBANY SPORTS 2017


ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany junior guard David Nichols has been named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List. The Lou Henson Award is given each year to the top Division I mid-major player.

 51 players across the country were selected to the Henson Award watch list. Earlier, Nichols was named to the NBC Sports Mid-Major All-American Team.

Nichols earned America East All-Conference First Team honors last season, being the first UAlbany sophomore to earn that distinction. He finished fourth in the America East with 17.9 points per game, sixth with 1.2 steals per game and eighth with 3.2 assists per game, scoring in double digits in 33 contests. The Lou Henson Award will be announced on March 31st, 2018
