Quintel Gates Nets Golden Goal to Provide University of Albany M Soccer With An Overtime Victory Over Buffalo - UAlbany Sports 2011

Albany, N.Y. In the 100th minute of Sunday's soccer match, junior forward Quintel Gates grabbed the rebound from freshman forward Brandon Wilson's shot to give UAlbany the win against Buffalo, 2-1 in overtime at Plumeri Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Great Danes improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Bulls suffered their first loss of the season to go 3-1-1. Gates and senior midfielder David Pinto tallied goals for UAlbany, while junior forward Joey Merlo scored Buffalo's lone goal.

The second half of a scoreless match changed in the 66th minute when freshman midfielder Pomare Te Anau crossed a 25 yard pass from the far sidelines into the box where his teammate Pinto was there to head it in to give UAlbany (2-2) a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo (3-1-1) responded in the 77th minute as senior forward Nate Woods set up Merlo with a pass that lofted over the defense to give Merlo an easy goal to tie the game at 1-1.

With overtime coming to a close, the Great Dane's Wilson took a shot just inside the box that junior goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi batted away but Gates was right there to pick up the loose ball and give UAlbany the 2-1 victory with :40 seconds left in overtime. "Hard work, running, the fitness that coach puts us through, and the boys pushing me every day in training", said Gates on his game winner. "A hard powerful shot (by Wilson) and a nice rebound and tap in to win."

The first half of the match was highlighted in the 25th minute with the Bulls junior midfielder Patrick Ryan's penalty kick that was denied by senior goalkeeper Adrian Foncette to preserve the scoreless tie at the half. "As goalkeepers, everyone has different ways of playing and mine is just playing free and I just made the save", said Foncette on his penalty kick save.

The Great Danes led in shots 14-10 with Gate's leading the team with three on net and six in total. Foncette tallied seven saves on eight chances while his counterpart junior Jonathan Viscosi batted away five of the seven shots that he saw on net.

UAlbany continues their 2011 season with the Binghamton Classic. The Great Danes will play Rider on Friday, Sept. 16 at 5pm then face Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 12 pm.
