New Rochelle, N.Y. - Sophomore Aubrey VanGorder scored the game's only goal, leading UAlbany to a 1-0 win over Iona in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Mazella Field.
VanGorder's goal came at the 12-minute mark of the first half. The forward took a crossing pass from Chrissy Klepper and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper's head to give UAlbany the early lead. The Great Danes continued to fire away at the net during the first half, finishing with nine shots in the period. Iona goalkeeper Trista Rivera kept the Gaels within reach, making five saves in the first 45 minutes of play, but could not get any help on the offensive side of the field.
UAlbany outshot Iona, 11-9, while the teams were tied with three corner kicks apiece. Dani Britt earned the start in the net for the Great Danes, making two saves in the first half, while freshman Jacky Ubert stopped two Iona shots between the pipes in the second half. Rivera played a complete game for Iona (1-4-1), making seven saves for the Gaels.
UAlbany (2-2-0) will return to action on Friday, hosting Colgate at Varsity Field at 4 p.m.
