UAlbany Men's Soccer Opens Season With 2-1 Victory Over Adelphi

Richmond, Va. – Junior captain Erik DiLorenzo scored the gamewinner 11 minutes into the second half to lead the University at Albany men’s soccer team to a season opening 2-1 victory over Adelphi at Virginia Commonwealth's Sports Backers Stadium on Friday evening in the opening match of the Nike/Alltel Classic.

The Panthers got on the board just over one minute into the game on a tally by Mark Hoffman off a pass from Kemalie Preston.

UAlbany responded 13 and a half minutes later on a goal by freshman forward Shaun Kane. Senior goalkeeper Steward Ceus was credited with the first assist of his career on the goal. The Great Danes and Adelphi played the remainder of the half scoreless, to head into intermission knotted at one apiece.

The Great Danes took the lead 2-1 on a goal by DiLorenzo in the 56th minute of the match off a feed from freshman Colin Veney.

UAlbany was outshot by the Panthers 14-9, but held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Panthers held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Ceus registered four saves in recording his 13th career victory. Shane Flanagan recorded three saves in between the pipes for Adelphi (0-1).

UAlbany (1-0) will return to action on Sunday, September 2, against host VCU in a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m.
