Orono, Maine – Sophomore Nicole Savage scored her team-high eighth goal of the season in the 22nd minute to lead No. 17 UAlbany to a 3-0 victory at Maine in the America East Conference field hockey opener for both teams on Friday, Sept. 28.
Savage got the Great Danes on the board at the 21:45 mark of the first half off a scramble from in front of the cage on an assist by senior Michelle Simpson. The teams played the final 13 minutes of the half scoreless to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
After nearly playing the second half scoreless, the Great Danes added two quick goals in the 63rd and 64th minutes. Junior Michele Polizois added her third goal of the season at the 27:20 mark of the second half. Jess Lindsey and Anouk Vandenberg were credited with assists on a scoring play that originated off a penalty corner.
The Great Danes, who are nationally ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, went ahead 3-0 as Simpson tallied her eighth goal of the season, to tie Savage for the team lead, by tipping in a shot by Sam Daly.
Ashley Ross recorded seven saves in earning her fourth shutout of the season for the Great Danes. Rebecca Giroux made five saves in goal for the Black Bears. Each team registered 12 shots in the contest. UAlbany and Maine (4-6, 0-1 America East) recorded five penalty corners apiece.
UAlbany (8-3, 1-0 America East) returns to action on Sunday against Massachusetts at Alumni Turf Field at 3:30 p.m.
