Great Danes Extend Win Streak With Two Wins in UAlbany Volleyball Classic

Albany, N.Y. – UAlbany’s Kamisha Kellam combined for 33 kills in two matches to lead the Great Dane volleyball team to wins over Eastern Michigan and Northeastern on the first day of the UAlbany Classic on Friday afternoon in University Gymnasium. UAlbany defeated EMU, 3-1, by scores of 30-11, 27-30, 30-18 and 30-17 before sweeping Northeastern, 3-0, with game scores of 30-24, 30-26 and 30-20.

A junior middle hitter, Kellam had a match-high 18 kills against EMU in the first match of the day to go along with five total blocks, and hit .593 for the match. Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey notched her fourth double-double of the season in the match with 14 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley tallied a double-double of her own with 51 assists and 18 digs, setting career highs in both categories. Freshman libero Tawny Dahmes and sophomore outside hitter Kate Eckhardt also helped out the Great Danes defensively, recording 20 and 16 digs apiece, respectively.

Eastern Michigan (7-5) was led by Becky Reenders, who totaled 12 kills, and Abby Reenders, who finished with 10 kills and 20 digs. Kate Sulewski also recorded a double-double with 39 assists and13 digs.

Cowdrey paced UAlbany in the win over Northeastern, recording a team-high 17 kills and 20 digs for her third straight match with double-figure kill totals and her second consecutive double-double performance. Kellam added 15 kills and four total blocks in the match, while Stanley tallied 42 assists and 16 digs. Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw totaled eight kills and four solo blocks for the Great Danes, who extended their current win streak to four straight.

Brittney Brown had 12 kills and 19 assists for Northeastern (6-7). Lauren DeTurk was the only other player in double figures for the Huskies with 19 kills. Leah Neubeck led Northeastern defensively with 24 digs while Kira Batura added eight kills and 19 digs.

Earlier in the day, Northeastern defeated Brown, 3-0. The second day of the UAlbany Classic starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with Eastern Michigan taking on Brown, followed by Northeastern and EMU at 1 p.m. UAlbany will conclude the tournament in a final match with Brown at 3 p.m.
