Albany, N.Y. – Michelle Simpson and Nicole Savage teamed up for two goals to lead the UAlbany field hockey team to a 2-1 double overtime win over No. 10 Ohio on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field. The win marks the highest-ranked opponent the Great Danes have defeated since joining Division I in 1999.
Simpson scored the gamewinner with 7:34 left in the second overtime. Savage, who had just entered on a substitution, picked up the ball on a fast break towards the cage. Savage recovered the rebound from her initial shot and passed off to Simpson who slipped the ball past Ohio goalkeeper Jessie Martin.
Ohio (3-2) struck first in the game, as Katelyn Shelley took an assist from the center from Torrie Albini and put the ball past UAlbany goalkeeper Ashley Ross with 19:29 left in the first half. Simpson scored her first goal of the day with 12:59 remaining in the half, tipping a shot by Savage into the cage on a penalty corner.
UAlbany outshot Ohio, 16-14, and also held a 13-11 advantage in penalty corners. Martin made five saves in the cage for the Bobcats, while Ross had seven stops for the Great Danes.
UAlbany (4-2) will host crosstown-rival Siena on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
