Albany, N.Y. – Freshman Ian Peach scored his first career goal as UAlbany tied Syracuse, 1-1, in double overtime in men’s soccer action at Varsity Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Peach headed in a crossing pass from the right wing from junior Don Johnson from seven yards out to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead four and a half minutes into the contest. UAlbany controlled play most of the rest of the first half, but the score remained the same going into halftime.
Seven and a half minutes into the second half, Syracuse’s Hansen Woodruff was taken down from behind just inside the penalty box to draw a penalty kick. Woodruff converted the attempt by slotting the ball into the left-hand side of the net for his third goal of the season. The two teams played a physical remainder of regulation, but finished the first 90 minutes tied at one apiece.
Syracuse controlled much of the play in the first 10 minute overtime period, but the UAlbany defense held strong and preserved the tie for the Great Danes. Junior goalkeeper Steward Ceus punched a point-blank header attempt by Woodruff over the crossbar at the 96-minute mark. Ceus registered another save off a header attempt from six yards out to force the second overtime period.
UAlbany outshot the Orange, 14-12, despite the fact the visitors rattled off five attempts at the goal in the extra period. Junior Mikael-Taylor McNamara led the Great Danes with three shots in the contest. Syracuse held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, with all three coming in the two overtime periods.
Ceus registered four saves in net for the Great Danes. Robert Cavicchia also recorded four saves between the pipes for Syracuse (2-0-3).
UAlbany (1-3-1) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, against host Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Green Bay Nike Classic at 3:30 p.m.
