Providence, R.I. – Lauren Vitkus scored the game-winning goal with one minute and 18 seconds remaining to lift Brown to a 13-12 victory over UAlbany on Saturday, March 7 at Berylson Family Fields.

Brown (2-1) broke a 10-10 deadlock when Krystina DeLuca connected on an eight-meter shot and Kelly Robinson finished off a feed from Molly McCarthy. UAlbany (1-3) came back with consecutive goals in a game that featured five ties and three lead changes. Kayla Best tallied her third goal of the game on a free-position shot, before Taylor Frink added her second goal of the contest to draw her team even at 12 apiece with 4:55 to play.

The Bears got the go-ahead goal when McCarthy found Vitkus in front of the cage and the senior buried a shot that beat UAlbany goalkeeper Katie Neer to the stick-side. UAlbany had an opportunity to get the equalizer with 16.4 seconds left. After being awarded a free-position opportunity, the Great Danes were whistled for an extra player on the field. Vitkus beat her opponent to ball on the ensuing throw to seal the outcome.

Brown’s Katelyn Caro, who had three goals and one assist, helped her team build a 10-6 cushion early in the second half. But the visitors rallied with four unanswered over the next four-plus minutes. Sophomore Jodi Battaglia scored twice in that stretch, including a tally off Julie Bush’s pass that tied the contest with 17:12 remaining.

The Bears’ Robinson scored three times, while goalkeeper Isabel Harvey stopped 10 shots. UAlbany sophomore midfielder Mel Rorie had a career-best four points with three goals and one assist. Best extended her goal-scoring streak to 34 consecutive games.
