Cambridge, Mass. – UAlbany’s Ricardo Estremera and Luke Schoen have been selected as the America East Conference men’s outdoor track and field performers of the week, as announced on Tuesday, March 31 by the conference office. Both Great Danes met an NCAA East Regional Championship qualifying standard at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State this past weekend. The meet featured 10 schools from the Atlantic Coast, Big East and Big 12 conferences.
In addition to eclipsing the regional standard by almost 13 seconds, Estremera broke the school record which stood for 15 years in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He clocked in a second-place time of 8:54.12 in the top-seeded section. Making his outdoor debut this spring, Schoen won the pole vault by clearing 17-feet, 0.75-inches. An All-American in the event last year, he finished ahead of eight student-athletes from ACC schools.
PAW PRINTS: The UAlbany men’s outdoor track and field team has had three individuals meet an NCAA East Regional Championship qualifying mark through the first two meets this spring ... In addition to Estremera and Schoen, Joe Greene eclipsed the standard in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at the Carolina Classic in Puerto Rico on Saturday, March 21 ... The 2009 NCAA East Regional Championship will be he hosted by North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. from May 29-30.
