Cambridge, Mass. -- University at Albany’s Corey Small has been named America East Conference Player of the Week in men’s lacrosse, as announced by the conference office on Monday, March 9. Freshman goalkeeper John Carroll earned the conference’s rookie of the week award.
Small, a senior attack from St. Catharines, Ontario, tied the program’s Division I single-game record with eight goals in a 15-12 victory over Delaware on March 6. He matched a standard set by Merrick Thomson on April 21, 2004 and his goal total was one off the school’s all-time mark. Small netted his eighth goal of the contest when he split a defensive double-team and hit an open net with 1:36 to play. He scored three consecutive times in the third quarter to help build an 11-6 lead. Small has at least one point in 20 consecutive games, the nation’s sixth-longest streak.
Carroll, a freshman goalkeeper from Nesconset, N.Y., made 13 saves and collected four ground balls in the non-league win. He has stopped double-figure shots in all three starts this season. UAlbany (2-1) hosts Massachusetts, ranked No. 13 nationally in latest USILA coaches’ poll, on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
