University of Albany's John Carroll Named A-East Rookie of the Week; Men's Lacrosse Ranked #18 in National Polls - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s John Carroll has been selected America East Conference Rookie of the Week in men’s lacrosse, as announced by the conference office on Monday, March 30. Carroll, a freshman goalkeeper, was chosen for the second time this season.

A native of Nesconset, N.Y., Carroll made eight saves, including three in the final quarter, in last Saturday’s 9-7 victory over Binghamton to begin America East Conference play. Carroll led a defensive unit that held the Bearcats scoreless for nearly 23 minutes in the second half.

Carroll, who has made double-figure saves against four opponents this season, has a .517 save percentage and a 10.34 goals against average in seven starting assignments.

Albany, N.Y. – After winning its America East Conference men’s lacrosse opener, UAlbany is ranked No. 18 in both the USILA and Nike/Inside Lacrosse national polls. The Great Danes will host conference opponent Hartford on Wednesday, April 1 at John Fallon Field. Face-off is 7:07 p.m. The contest will be televised on Time Warner Cable (TW3), with Greg Tobben and Andrew Catalon handling the play-by-play duties.

UAlbany’s Alumni Association and its Varsity Club are sponsoring Spring Stomp on Wednesday, with a lacrosse doubleheader featured as part of the festivities. The women meet America East-rival Vermont at 3:00 p.m. prior to the men’s game. The first 500 students will receive a hot dog, a soda and a free T-shirt.

There will be two raffles with chances to win gift cards and prizes. All proceeds from the second raffle will benefit The Richard Bailey Memorial Fund. In the wake of Bailey's death, UAlbany student leaders created The Richard Bailey Memorial Fund.
