Bronx, N.Y. – University at Albany’s Mikael McNamara (Mississauga, Ontario/Iona Catholic Secondary School) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine District I Academic All-America Men’s Soccer Team, as announced on Thursday, Oct. 30 by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
McNamara, a chemistry major with a 3.51 cumulative grade point average, was chosen to the all-district second team. He has been named to the America East Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll twice, and was also on UAlbany’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll last year.
The two-year starter has appeared in all 71 matches of his career and is putting up career numbers as a senior this season. Although regularly a midfielder, he showed his versatility by moving back as a starting defender during the second half of the season. In McNamara’s four starts on defense, the Great Danes posted three shutouts. He has two goals and two assists for six points this fall.
In addition, McNamara has helped the men’s soccer team move to the top of the America East standings. The team’s 12 wins has already tied the program’s Division I single-season mark. UAlbany, which entered the week tied for third in the nation with 2.40 goals per game, is already guaranteed at least one home match in the upcoming America East Conference Tournament.
The Great Danes can lock up the top seed in the league tournament for the first time ever if they can win their final match of the regular season at home versus Vermont on Sunday at 1 p.m. McNamara is one of six seniors who will be recognized prior to the match.
