Somerset, N.J. – University at Albany’s David McCarty has been chosen the Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week in football, as announced today by the conference office. McCarty has won or shared the weekly honor three times this season. Eddie Delaney was named the NEC Rookie of the Week as his team moved into a tied for first place in the conference standings.
McCarty, a junior tailback from Gansevoort, N.Y., rushed for 207 yards and one touchdown in last Saturday’s 26-21 victory over previously unbeaten Sacred Heart. McCarty, who also caught three passes for 31 yards, scored on a 2-yard blast to put his team ahead for good, 17-14, in the third quarter. He also had eight carries for 61 yards on his team’s final possession, a drive that wiped out the final 4:40 of the game and left his team on the SHU 1-yard line as time expired. McCarty, who ran for 200 or more yards for the third time in his career, has reached the century mark in 12 of his last 13 starts. He moved to fifth on the school’s career rushing chart with 2,519 yards and extended his touchdown streak to 15 consecutive games.
Delaney, a redshirt freshman from Holtsville, N.Y., had a career-high five tackles, including two unassisted, and two pass break-ups in his second start as a collegian. The UAlbany defense held the NEC’s top offense to 298 total yards and 51 net rushing yards. A 6-foot-6, 235-pound defensive end, Delaney plays without a left hand and wears an insulin pump to control diabetes.
