Albany, N.Y. - Shayla Bergeron scored the gamewinner in the second overtime period to lead UAlbany to a 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Vermont in an America East Women's soccer quarterfinal match on Thursday afternoon at Varsity Field. The third-seeded Great Danes move on to the tournament semifinals against #2 Hartford on Sunday.
After a scoreless first overtime, Bergeron tallied the decisive goal in the 108th minute. The junior forward picked the ball up at midfield and took it all the way through the Vermont defense. She passed four Catamount defenders, coming head on with Vermont goalkeeper Sarah Leiby, chipping the ball into the left side of the net for the score.
UAlbany got on the board first in regulation, as Maggie DeVerna passed the ball ahead to Katie Grant, who shot from just outside the goalie box. In the 10th minute, Grant's shot sailed just above Leiby's head and into the top right corner. Vermont netted the equalizer in the 72nd minute to send the ball to overtime. Off of a Vermont free kick into the box, Midori Eckenstein headed the ball towards the net, where Ellie Mills got a head on the ball in the air and redirected it past UAlbany's Jackie Ubert.
The teams played a fairly even game, with Vermont holding a slight 19-16 edge in shots and 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Ubert played all 107:34 for the Great Danes between the pipes, making 10 saves. Leiby also recorded a complete game for Vermont, stopping 10 shots. The Catamounts end the season with a 5-10 overall record.
UAlbany (8-9) will look to win its first America East semifinal game against Hartford on Sunday at 2 p.m. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season in Albany.
