Charlottesville, Va. - Casey Wright recorded a 11 kills in a 3-0 win over Virginia to close out the Marriot Cavalier Invitational with a victory for the UAlbany volleyball team on Saturday evening. The Great Danes defeated the host Cavaliers with scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16 in the final match of the tournament. Wright led UAlbany in the early match as well, with a career-high 14 kills in a 3-1 loss to Virginia Tech. The Hokies won with scores of 25-14, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-10.
Valerie Sourbeer led the Great Danes in the win over Virginia with a match-high 14 kills to go along with six digs. Hillary White added to the offensive attack with eight kills and also recorded a match-best 10 digs. Brooke Stanley continued her strong quarterbacking of the UAlbany offense with 37 assists, along with eight digs and two service aces. Simone Asque paced the Cavaliers with 10 kills, while Lauren Dickson added nine kills and eight digs. Rachel Gray finished with 26 assists and seven digs defensively for Virginia (6-6).
Earlier in the day, Wright hit a powerful .357 to lead the Great Danes as the only player in double-figure kills. Sourbeer finished with nine kills while White tallied seven kills and 10 digs. Kalyn Mostert led the team with 14 digs defensively, while Stanley recorded 33 assists, five digs, three kills and two service aces. Jennifer Wiker led all players with 17 kills as one of three Hokies to reach double-figure kill totals. Felicia Willoughby and Taylor Parrish added 12 kills apiece for Virginia Tech (8-1), while Willoughby also finished with seven total blocks. Jill Gergen led the team defensively with a match-high 21 digs.
Stanley also earned her fourth straight All-Tournament Team honor of the season. She has been named to the All-Tournament squads in every tournament the Great Danes have participated in this season, including earning the Most Valuable Player selection at the UAlbany Classic.
UAlbany (5-8) will return to action next weekend as they participate at the Holiday Inn HD Tournament hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The Great Danes will take on the host Quakers along with St. Francis (Pa.) and Santa Clara.
