University of Albany President Philip Gives Lee McElroy FCS Northeast Athletic Director Award at Welcome Event - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy greeted nearly 475 student-athletes back to campus on the first day of fall semester classes at the athletic department's annual Welcome Back event, held at SEFCU Arena on Monday, Aug. 31. McElroy reviewed the success of the 2008-09 academic year, when the Great Danes won seven conference championships and two IC4A track and field titles, plus sent two teams to NCAA Tournament play. He also introduced the head coaches and administrative staff.

UAlbany President George M. Philip also attended the welcome event. Philip was installed as the 18th president of the school last June after being unanimously recommended as permanent president to SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher by UAlbany's University Council and the Presidential Search Committee. Philip presented McElroy the 2008-09 Under Armour Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year Award.

"This is an event where we provide our student-athletes with an opportunity to get to know our coaches and staff," McElroy said. "It is important that they understand the athletic department's goals and aspirations are for the upcoming year. We want to impress upon them the values of academics, athletic competition and community responsibility."

UAlbany sponsors 19 Division I athletic programs, including eight for men and 11 for women. The Great Danes compete in the America East Conference as a full member, and has associate member status in the Northeast Conference (football) and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (women's golf). The school is celebrating 10 years of Division I athletics in 2009-10.
