Schumer to announce 'landmark' agreement between federal government, University of Albany's NanoCollege

Sen. Charles Schumer is planning to announce what he called a "landmark agreement" that will create a partnership between the federal government and the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

Schumer (D-NY) said the agreement, which he will formally announce on Monday at the college, will bring federal research expertise and resources to the Albany NanoTech campus where UAlbany's NanoCollege is located.

Schumer said the partnership will trigger a new wave of funding to Albany NanoTech. The senator said he had previously secured $900,000 for a new nanotech research center at Albany NanoTech. That funding, which he called seed money, will jump-start further investments in the center totaling $14 million.

Schumer said he brokers an agreement between the Albany NanoTech and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He will be joined by James Turner, head of NIST, on Monday.

Schumer's spokesman Alex Detrick said the senator's announcement will include details on job training programs and tax credits.
