BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It was below freezing in Albany yesterday, but the University at Albany women’s tennis team warmed up to California temperatures quickly this afternoon in a 7-0 victory over CSUB at Stockdale Country Club.

CSUB (3-13 overall) played strong at several spots in the lineup, but Albany improved to 11-3 with consistent play and just enough big points to complete the sweep.

The day’s best match came at No. 5 singles. Roadrunner freshman Veronica Dimas took the first set from Laine Mackey, 6-4, but couldn’t sustain the momentum before losing in a third set super tiebreaker. Mackey came back to win the second set 6-4 and then jumped to leads of 3-0 and 7-3 in the tiebreaker. Dimas battled back to 9-8 before the Great Dane sophomore finished the set.

At first singles, CSUB freshman Nefeli Diamanti gave Albany’s Susan Ma all she could handle early before succumbing 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Roadrunner senior Sara Mijwel gave a strong effort in her first match at second singles, where she fell to Kim Weltman 7-5, 6-3.

CSUB will close out its 2009 season Monday when it hosts NCAA Division II power Cal State Stanislaus on the Sally Ann Silva Courts. Doubles action kicks off the match at 2 p.m.
