University of Albany Tennis Defeats Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton - UAlbany Sports 2009

Bakersfield, Calif. – Caitlin Crowley recorded a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Korina Barefield in singles action and teamed up with Kim Weltman for an 8-0 win in doubles play to help lead UAlbany to a 7-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield in non-conference tennis action on the team’s first day of play in California on Thursday. Crowley also recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win on Friday as the Great Danes defeated Cal State Fullerton, 5-2.

Against Cal State Bakersfield, Crowley was the only player not to drop a set in her win at the No. 6 spot. Susan Ma defeated Nefeli Diamanti, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at the top singles position, while Weltman recorded a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Sara Mijwel at No. 2 singles. Senior Charlotte Tatler defeated Kaydee Graham, 6-3, 6-1, while Holly Smith posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ashlee Thorneycroft at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Laine Mackey completed the sweep of singles matches for the Great Danes with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over Veronica Dimas at the fifth position.

In doubles action, Crowley and Weltman defeated Barefield and Veronica Dimas in straight sets at the No. 3 spots. Ma and Mackey teamed up to record an 8-5 win over Diamanti and Graham in the top doubles match, while Tatler and Smith defeated Mijwel and Thorneycroft, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles.

At Cal State Fullerton, Crowley recorded a straight-set win over Lani Agsalud at the No. 6 singles position. Ma defeated Shelly Injejikian, 6-3, 6-2 at the top singles position, while Weltman recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win over Cheyenne Inglis at the second singles spot. Tatler and Mackey both dropped the first set of their singles matches, but went on the record victories by winning second and third sets. Tatler fell 3-6 in her first set against Karina Akhmedova, but recorded scores of 6-2 and 6-4 to claim the win. Mackey lost a 4-6 first set to Jerusha Cruz, but responded in the next two sets with scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Smith dropped the only singles match for the Great Danes, falling to Brandy Andrews, 6-2, 6-1.

Fullerton won all three doubles matches to earn the point. English and Injejikian defeated Ma and Mackey at the top spot with a score of 8-1. Smith and Tatler fell to Cruz and Agsalud, 8-4, while Andrews and Akhmedova defeated Weltman and Aubrey Brooks, 8-1.

UAlbany will return to action on Wednesday, April 15, hosting crosstown-rival Siena at 3 p.m.
