Cambridge, Mass. – Mike Tirri was named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Tirri, the Great Danes’ starting first baseman as a freshman, recorded a .300 average over five games last week. He had six hits, including two doubles and two home runs, to post a .700 slugging percentage. He finished with six runs scored and 12 RBI in 20 at-bats.
Tirri recorded two hits, including a home run, and scored twice in a 9-4 non-conference loss at Manhattan on April 1. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI in a 15-4 win over UMBC in the series opener and closed out the weekend with a three-run homer in the 10-7 finale win. Tirri, who didn’t commit an error all week, connected with second baseman Kyle Crean in the ninth to turn a double play and end a UMBC scoring threat to seal the win.
UAlbany (9-16, AE 4-0) is currently first in the America East standings. The Great Danes will take on non-conference opponent Marist in a doubleheader on Wednesday before hosting Binghamton in a four-game conference weekend series.
