New Haven, Conn. – Ana Mungo recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Alice Chen for an 8-4 win at top doubles to lead UMBC to a 4-0 win over UAlbany in the first round of the America East Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at the Yale Tennis Center.
Senior Kim Weltman teamed up with freshman Aubrey Brooks to win the third doubles match up, defeating UMBC’s Emily Mannix and Lauren Hamilton, 8-4, for the Great Danes’ lone victory of the day. Cornelia Carapcea and Joy Adewumi posted an 8-1 win over UAlbany’s Holly Smith and Charlotte Tatler to claim the doubles point for the Retreivers.
In singles action, Carapcea defeated Tatler, 6-1, 6-1, while Adewumi posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Smith at No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectfully. The three remaining singles matches did not finish once UMBC claimed the winning point in singles play. Weltman led Chen, 6-3, 5-2, at the number two spot, while Laine Mackey owned a 6-4, 1-4 lead over Mannix at the No. 5 spot. Brooks also led Hamilton 6-3, 2-3 in the final singles match.
UAlbany will take on Hartford on Saturday at 1 p.m. to determine the fifth and sixth place teams in the tournament.
