Josh Willimott Pitches UAlbany Past Wofford in Series Finale 6-4

Spartanburg, S.C. – Junior right hander Josh Willimott struck out four over five innings to lead UAlbany to a 6-4 win over Wofford on Sunday, March 2 in the final game of a four-game weekend series at Russell C. King Field at Switzer Stadium.

After four scoreless innings, the Great Danes posted five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Senior catcher Tom Zink plated junior shortstop Sean Donovan and junior designated hitter Ryan Gugel with a single to center to start the scoring. Following a hit batsman, sophomore right fielder Brendan Rowland, junior left fielder Gary Pitcheralle and junior center fielder Dave West connected for consecutive RBI singles to give UAlbany a 5-0 lead.
The Terriers answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth and a run in the sixth. Sophomore shortstop Michael Gilmartin, who picked up two saves in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep, drove in two runs with a single to center field in the fifth. Right fielder Sterling Dye closed the gap to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

UAlbany (2-5) pushed its lead out to 6-3 with a run in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, senior first baseman Mike Konstanty singled to center to score freshman second baseman Kyle Crean. Wofford (6-1) narrowed its deficit to 6-4 in the bottom half of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Neil Robinette. Junior right hander Sean Gregory ended the rally by inducing consecutive outs and pitching a scoreless last two innings.

Willimott earned his first win of the season, yielding just two runs on five hits over five innings. Junior lefty Dave Noble pitched the sixth for the Great Danes and Gregory earned the save by pitching three scoreless innings. Pete Noordsy took the loss for the Terriers, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings.

UAlbany returns to the diamond on Friday, March 7 at 5 p.m. in Greenville, S.C. against Furman.
