America East Women's Basketball Championship Bracket Set


CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The bracket for the 2008 America East Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Friendship Cottage Cheese in West Hartford, Conn. March 13-16 is set with still one more game remaining in the regular season. The only seeds still up in the air entering the last day of competition was the three and four seeds, which was decided by Boston University’s come-from-behind overtime victory over Albany at Case Gym on Saturday afternoon. The University of Maine (7-22 overall, 4-12 in America East) and Stony Brook University (7-22, 2-14) will meet in Thursday night’s first round game as the eight and nine seeds, respectively. The winner will take on first-seeded Hartford (23-5, 13-2) on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first game of session three. The second quarterfinal in the session will pit No. 5 Binghamton (11-18, 9-7) and No. 4 Albany (12-17, 10-6) together in a series the Great Danes swept this season.

Earlier on Friday, the first two quarterfinals will be played. At 12 p.m., No. 7 New Hampshire (7-21, 4-12) and No. 2 Vermont (22-7, 13-3) will play, while No. 6 UMBC (9-19, 5-10) and No. 3 Boston U. (18-11, 11-5) will compete half an hour after the first game ends.

The winners of the evening quarterfinals will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon and the winners of the afternoon quarterfinals will take the court at approximately 7:30 p.m. The final two teams standing will play for the conference championship title on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.

The first round and quarterfinal games will be broadcast for free online as America East PackCasts. Those streams are available at the America East Zone on www.AmericaEast.com. New England Sports Network will air the semifinal games from Chase Family Arena live, and the title game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet. Eric Frede will have the play-by-play and Leah Secondo will provide color analysis for each of the televised games.

The Retrievers are the defending America East champions, winning last year’s title as the seven seed. They became the first program in conference history to defeat a three-, two-, and one-seed on the way to a tournament crown.
