Indoor Track & Field Athletes Named to America East All-Academic Team

Cambridge, Mass. – Six members of the University at Albany men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams have been named to the America East Conference All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday, March 5. The recognition is based on both athletic and academic achievements. The all-academic team has been selected based on the student-athlete’s academic and athletic accomplishments. For consideration, student-athletes are required to have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 entering the season and be a top-three finisher at the conference championship meet.

The women’s team placed five members on the all-academic team, while one member of the men’s team earned a spot. Junior Laura Cummings, an English major with a 3.75 GPA, placed third at the conference championships in the 1,000-meter run in 2:55.56. Junior Candice Mann, who carries a 3.73 GPA as a criminal justice major, finished third in the shot put with a toss of 43-feet, 4.25-inches. Zuliana Fontanez, a sophomore accounting major and business administration minor with a 3.49 GPA, placed second in the 500-meter dash in 1:15.85 and was a member of the second place 4x400-meter relay team. Junior Jenn Gurrant, who holds a 3.28 GPA while majoring in communication with a minor in business administration, placed third in the long jump with a distance of 18-feet, 1-inch and triple jump with a leap of 41-feet, 9.25-inches, which set the school record at the time. Brenna Militello, a senior mathematics major with a 3.11 GPA, came in third in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-feet, 4-inches.

Sophomore Anthony Collica, an undeclared major with a 3.25 GPA, finished third in the high jump by clearing the bar at 6-feet, 6-inches.

The Great Danes will compete at the IC4A and ECAC Championships on March 8-9 in Boston, Mass.
