Univeristy of Albany's Wilfredo de Jesus Elias Wins Third Weight Throw Title on A-East Indoor Meet's First Day - UAlbany Sports 2011

Boston, Mass. - University at Albany's Wilfredo de Jesus Elias won the weight throw for the third consecutive year on the first day of competition at the America East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 18. In the men's standings, Binghamton has the opening-day lead with 57 points, while the Great Danes are second with 47.

de Jesus Elias threw 64-feet, 10-inches on the first of six attempts to win the event by nearly six feet over New Hampshire's Paul DeTurk. A senior from Arroyo, Puerto Rico, de Jesus Elias is the third conference athlete to win three straight weight throw championships, joining Northeastern's Anders Halvorsen (1989-92) and Boston U.'s Benjamin Gary (1999-01).

UAlbany's Fred Casimo, a senior competing for the first time this season, and Kareem Morris went one-two in the long jump. Casimo reached a distance of 23-feet, 2.50-inches on his fifth attempt to win the competition. Morris posted a career-best mark of 22-10.50. The freshman had a solid first day, as he qualified for Saturday's finals in the 60-meter dash in 6.90 seconds and 200-meters in 21.81. Each time met the IC4A-qualifying standard.

For the third year in a row, UAlbany was a winner in the distance medley relay. The team of Greg Kiley, Peter Rowell, Aaron Lozier and Paul Lagno broke the tape at the finish line in 9:48.80. In addition, Jonathan Santana qualified for the championship races in the 200- and 400-dashes. Santana sprinted the 200 in 21.91 and the 400 in 48.74, both IC4A-qualifying efforts.
