Michele Polizois Scores Twice to Lead #17 UAlbany Field Hockey, 5-1, Over Cornell

Ithaca, N.Y. – Michele Polizois scored two first half goals as #17 UAlbany defeated Cornell, 5-1, in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday evening.

Polizois scored her first goal of the game on a corner at 28:49, with assists going to Jess Lindsey and Anouk Vandenberg. The trio teamed up again later in the stanza to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.

Sophomore Nicole Savage added to the UAlbany total on a corner at the 47 minute mark off assists from Lindsey and Vandenberg. Freshman Joanna Irey scored her first collegiate goal at 49:33to give the Great Danes a 4-0 lead off an assist from Michelle Simpson.

Cornell (6-5) broke the shutout at 65:40, as Katie De Stio took an assist from Brenna Gulotta and slipped a shot past UAlbany goalkeeper Ashley Ross. A minute and a half later, Vandenberg gave the Great Danes back their four-goal advantage, scoring an unassisted tally.

Ross finished with four saves in the cage for the Great Danes while Cornell goalkeeper Shannon Prescott made five stops for the Big Red. UAlbany outshot Cornell 15-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

UAlbany (12-3), which has been ranked in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for five straight weeks, has a seven-day layoff before traveling to America East Conference rival Boston U. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
