Burlington, Vt. – The UAlbany men’s soccer team defeated Vermont on Saturday afternoon, 1-0, in double overtime on an own goal by the Catamounts. Great Danes head coach Johan Aarnio earned his 100th career coaching victory with the win.
Freshman Ian Peach served a shot parallel to the goal line in the 107th minute and a Vermont defender knocked the ball into the goal as he was sliding to keep it out.
Aarnio improves his overall record to 100-77-21 in 13 combined years at RPI and UAlbany, including a 59-61-16 record in eight seasons at UAlbany.
UAlbany was outshot in the contest 21-12, including a 14-3 margin in the second half, but was able to keep the Catamounts off the board. Vermont also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. UAlbany senior goalkeeper Steward Ceus recorded nine saves in the contest, including a wide open shot by Vermont’s Marty Galvin early in the second overtime period. Roger Scully stopped two shots in goal for Vermont (3-8, AE 0-1).
UAlbany (2-7-1, AE 1-0) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. against America East opponent New Hampshire.
