UAlbany's Wilfredo de Jesus Elias Wins IC4A Weight Throw Title with School-Record Mark - UAlbany Sports 2011


Boston, Mass. - University at Albany's Wilfredo de Jesus Elias won the weight throw with a school-record performance on the first day of competition at the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center on Saturday, March 5.

de Jesus Elias, a senior from Arroyo, Puerto Rico, eclipsed his own school standard with a toss of 65-feet, 6.25-inches on his sixth and final attempt. He becomes the second Great Dane since 2006 to capture an IC4A indoor crown. de Jesus Elias, who finished sixth at the IC4A meet last year, set the previous mark of 65-6 last month at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. Temple's Robert Keogh was second by throwing 61-8.25.

In IC4A preliminary races, Greg Kiley recorded the third-fastest time in school history by running 2:24.95 to advance in the 1,000-meter run. Paul Lagno qualified in the mile run (4:08.63) and Peter Rowell moved on in the 500-meter dash (1:03.91). Tristan Akong, the current America East Conference champion, posted a qualifying time of 6.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash. In addition, Aaron Lozier anchored the 4x800-meter relay to the next round as the group was clocked in 7:33.92.

At the ECAC Championships, UAlbany's Yushanni Durrant finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 2-inches. She tied the second-longest mark in program annals at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. Connecticut's Kristen Brown won the title with a first-place jump of 19-6.75.

Ashley Mahlmeister took sixth in the pentathlon with 3,421 points, tying the second-highest total by a Great Dane in the event. Mahlmeister tied for second in the long jump (17-6.25) and was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.92) in the five-event competition. Christen Griffin reached the 60-hurdles final and hit the tape in 8.66 seconds. Alli Rogers (400-meters) and Kathryn Fanning (1,000-meters) are also in Sunday's championship races.
