University of Albany's Susan Ma's First Singles Win Leads Tennis to a 7-0 Decision Over Captial Region Foe Union - UAlbany Sports 2010


Albany, N.Y. - Susan Ma recorded a win at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Laine Mackey for a win at top doubles to lead UAlbany tennis to a 7-0 sweep of Capital Region rival Union at the UAlbany Bubble on Thursday afternoon.

Ma posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Union's Elise Malkin at the top singles spot, while Mackey recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brittany Gilbert at No. 2 singles to lead the Great Danes. At third singles, the Great Danes' Aubrey Brooks defeated Andie Coopersmith, 6-2, 6-2, while Sarah Iannone posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Union's D.D. Gaudian at the fourth position. Melissa Coughlin and Rachel Drake wrapped up the singles wins for UAlbany with victories over Samantha Maratori and Rachel Steiner, respectively. Coughlin won with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while Drake defeated Steiner, 6-1, 4-6, 10-4.

In doubles action, Ma and Mackey posted an 8-2 win over Malkin and Coopersmith, while Brooks and Iannone won an 8-4 decision over Gilbert and Gaudian. Coughlin and Drake completed the sweep for UAlbany with an 8-1 victory over Maratori and Steiner at No. 3 doubles.

UAlbany will continue its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Marist Invitational.
