Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Mike Black has been selected as America East Conference Rookie of the Week in men's basketball, as announced on Monday, Feb. 8 by the conference office. Black is the third UAlbany player to be honored with the weekly award this season.
Black, a freshman guard from Chicago, Ill., averaged 14.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds in a pair of conference games last week. He matched a career-best with 18 points, plus had four rebounds and four assists against Boston University in last Saturday's Big Purple Growl game. Black added 11 points and four assists at Binghamton on Feb. 3.
Black, who is scoring at a 10.0 clip over his last eight games, has scored in double figures seven times this season. He is averaging 5.9 points and 1.8 assists in 25 appearances this season.
Paw Prints: UAlbany's Logan Aronhalt and Blake Metcalf were also chosen as the conference rookie of the week earlier this season ... the 13th annual Big Purple Growl, the school's winter homecoming, produced the largest crowd (4,410) of the season at SEFCU Arena ... Big Purple Growl was attended by 4,000-plus fans for the sixth consecutive year ... the Great Danes host New Hampshire on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. ... the contest will be televised in the Capital Region on Time Warner Cable (TW3), with Rodger Wyland and John Quattrocchi providing the coverage ... the game can also be heard on Fox Sports 980, WOFX-AM, with Greg Tobben on play-by-play.
