Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany men’s soccer junior forward Claudio Dantas earned America East Conference Co-Player of the Week laurels as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The two-time junior college All-American was named the Tournament MVP and helped the Great Danes win the Robert Morris Invitational championship.
Dantas scored all three goals for the Great Danes, with both of his game-winning scores coming off headers. On Friday, he scored twice in his team’s 2-1 win over Pittsburgh. It was the Great Danes’ first win over a Big East Conference opponent since Sept. 22, 2004. In Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Robert Morris, he took a header from freshman Konner McNamara and redirected it for the match’s only goal.
The Great Danes are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2004 when they won a share of the America East regular-season crown. UAlbany will travel to California for the Courtyard by Marriott Central San Diego Tournament this weekend. The squad faces San Diego on Friday at 10:00 p.m. Eastern and San Diego State on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
Note: The Great Danes are ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Northeast Regional poll ... St. John’s is first in the regional rankings, while Connecticut and South Florida follow in the order ...
