ALBANY - The Washington Avenue Armory in Albany is losing a money-maker. World Team Tennis is taking its stars like Serena Williams and Anna Kournikova and moving up the road to the University at Albany.
New York Buzz owner Nitty Singh says her team will move their home games this season to SEFCU Arena on the UAlbany campus. A news conference to formally announce the switch has been scheduled for Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.
Nitty says UAlbany offers a bigger venue to accommodate more fans. The armory seated 2,300. SEFCU Arena will seat 3,300.
Plus, the parking will be better and the arena has an air conditioning system, which the armory does not.
Armory General Manager Jim Coyne says the lack of an air conditioner was a big factor in the Buzz leaving. He also said losing the buzz is not a big financial loss.
Prior to last season, the Buzz spent 13 summers outdoors at Central Park in Schenectady.
