New York, N.Y. – Wilfredo de Jesus Elias broke his own school record in the weight throw for the second time this winter while the men’s distance medley relay team eclipsed the program standard by seven seconds to pace UAlbany at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 6-7. The Great Danes, who have seen school records in 10 men’s and women’s events reset this season, also had Luke Schoen provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship in the pole vault and Kamilah McShine record two ECAC qualifying marks at the national meet.

The men’s DMR team consisting of Aaron Lozier, Joe Greene, Tyler Fogarty and Ricardo Estremera clocked in an eighth-place IC4A qualifying time of 9:48.27, breaking the previous mark of 9:55.02 set in 2007 by John Moore, Greene, Joe Belokopitsky and Estremera. Lozier led off by finishing the 1,200-meter leg in 3:00.02, and Greene ran the 400-meter leg in 47.2 seconds. Fogarty took the baton from Greene and finished the 800-meter leg in 1:48.8, while Estremera anchored the squad and clocked in a time of 4:11.9 in the mile.

The men’s team also had it’s 4x400 and 4x800-meter relay teams qualify for IC4As, while the women’s 4x800 relay met the ECAC standard for the first time this season. The men’s 4x400 consisting of Pat Weider, Alie Beauvais, Jeffery Barnes and Greene was 12th in 3:14.31. Running the men’s 4x800 which finished 11th in 7:46.38 were Moore, Nick Santos, Fogarty and Lozier, while Melissa Lee, Laura Cummings, Zuliana Fontanez and Esperanza Blanco combined for a fourth-place time of 9:10.27.

Elias’ school-record mark in the weight throw championship division was 63-feet, 6.75-inches, bettering his mark of 62-9.50 which was recorded at the Great Dane Classic. In addition to Elias’ fourth-place finish, Will Anger turned in an IC4A qualifying throw of 56-3.75 to place 15th. Leading the way for the women’s throwers were Kadine Johnson and Ritshell Verdier. Johnson finished 27th in the shot put with a mark of 41-3.25, while Verdier was 32nd in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 46-0.

For the third time this winter, Schoen turned in a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAAs. He cleared 17 feet, 4-1/2 inches to place fourth in the championship division. McShine recorded two ECAC qualifying marks in the 60-meter high hurdles and the long jump. She placed seventh with a leap of 19-1.25 in the long jump college division, and recorded a 22nd-place time of 8.66 in the 60-meter hurdles.

In addition to McShine, the Great Danes also had seven individuals qualify for the IC4A and ECAC Championships in the jumping and hurdle events. In the long jump, Fred Casimo was fourth in the college division for leaping 23-7.25 and Valete Graham was 10th in the championship division with a mark of 23-5.25. Mike McCadney, Nasim Siddeeq and Jenn Gurrant accomplished the feat in the men’s and women’s triple jump championship divisions. Gurrant was 11th with a jump of 41-5.25, McCadney finished 15th with a mark of 49-5.50 and Siddeeq placed 17th for leaping 49-4.50. Sandy Antenor was 16th in the college division of the triple jump with a mark of 38-9.50, while Jean Juste clocked in a 22nd-place time of 8.22 seconds in the 60-meter high hurdles.

In the sprinting events, UAlbany was led by Greene and Lee. Greene finished 23rd in the 400 in an IC4A qualifying time of 48.36, while Lee placed 18th in the 500, clocking in a time of 1:16.56, which was just shy of the ECAC standard of 1:16.00.

Two Great Danes met an IC4A standard in the middle distance events. Fogarty finished fifth in the men’s college division of the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.76, and Lozier was 14th in 1:54.10. The best effort on the women’s side came from Fontanez, whose 10th-place finish of 2:15.41 in the 800 missed the ECAC mark by just 1.07 seconds. In the distance events, UAlbany was led by Ada Lauterbach and R.J. Sniffen. Lauterbach finished clocked in a 28th-place time of 10:27.92 in the women’s college division of the 3,000-meter run, while Sniffen finished 40th in the men’s race in 8:51.64.

The Great Danes also had several men’s and women’s student-athletes compete at Yale’s Giegengack Invitational over the weekend. Several student-athletes for the purple and gold recorded season-best marks and top-five finishes.

Rebecca Power cleared 10-6, which was good for third and was the highest mark by a UAlbany women’s pole vaulter this winter. The women’s DMR consisting of Jenn Pierson, Jessica Barberio, Allie Carlson and Laura Varble finished fifth in 13:20.67. In addition, seven UAlbany women recorded a season-best time in the 200-meter dash.

Jordan Pollock posted a pair of top-five finishes to pace the men at the meet. He was fourth in the triple jump (43-2.25) and fifth in the high jump (5-10.50). The UAlbany men were also strong in the middle distance events, as seven season-best times were recorded in the 800 and 1,000.
