Marine Corps Coordinating Council Supports UAlbany Foundation Scholarship with $75,000 Donation

The Marine Corps Coordinating Council of NY Capital Region has donated $75,000 to the University at Albany Foundation to establish the Marine Sergeant William D. Powers Scholarship.

The Marine Sergeant William D. Powers Scholarship provides support for a student who is pursuing a degree at UAlbany, and who is either currently enlisted in the Marine Corps (Actives or Reserves) or a veteran who has been honorably discharged. The Marine Corp Coordinating Council of NY Capital Region created the scholarship in honor of Powers, a former Marine sergeant who served five years active duty in the U.S. Marine Corp and now serves as the Council's honorary president. A former chairman of the state Republican Committee from 1991 to 2001, Powers currently heads Powers & Company, an Albany-based governmental and business development consulting firm.

"We are grateful to the Marine Corps Coordinating Council for establishing this scholarship," said University at Albany Interim President George M. Philip. "Their generous support will have a positive impact on the lives of deserving student Marines."

"I understand the many challenges our Marines face and I know that education is one of the best ways for them to advance in life," said former Sergeant Powers. "Between the training they receive in the USMC and the education from the University at Albany I am sure our young scholar Marines will go far. This scholarship will help ensure that."
