Albany, N.Y. – UAlbany’s Leah McIntosh and Gina Mason earned America East Conference weekly softball awards, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. McIntosh earned her fourth pitcher of the week honor, while Mason was named the conference’s rookie of the week for the first time.
McIntosh, a native of Whitby, Ontario, tossed three complete-game shutouts for wins last week, recording 39 strikeouts in 21.0 innings to go 3-0 on the week. The sophomore hurler took a perfect game inot the seventh inning in a 4-0 win over Manhattan and established UAlbany’s Division I single-game record with 18 strikeouts. McIntosh also recorded two shutout wins over Boston U., fanning 15 in a 7-0 win on Saturday and six in a 3-2 victory on Sunday, helping to secure the Great Danes as the top seed in the conference tournament.
Mason, who saw time at first base and designated player for UAlbany last week, hit .467, recording seven hits, five runs and 10 RBI. She hit two doubles, one triple and two home runs, including her first career grand slam in a 7-0 win over Boston U. Mason, a native of Sacramento, Calif., finished with a 1.133 slugging percentage and did not strike out in 15 at bats. She recorded six RBI in the series-opening win against Boston U., and followed up with a 2-for-3 performance, including a two-run double, in the nightcap. Mason leads all UAlbany freshmen, hitting .230 for the season, and is third on the team with 25 RBI.
