University of Albany's Kadine Johnson & Wilfredo de Jesus Elias Highlight Performances at Army's Dick Shea Open - UAlbany Sports 2011


West Point, N.Y. - University at Albany's Kadine Johnson finished second in the hammer throw, shot put and discus to highlight her team's performance at the United States Military Academy's Dick Shea Open, held in 30-degree temperatures at Shea Stadium on Saturday, March 26.

Johnson recorded the second-best hammer throw in school history with a mark of 175-feet, 1-inch. She set the UAlbany record of 180-4 last week in Puerto Rico. The senior from New Rochelle, N.Y. posted a mark of 43-7.75 in the shot put, the fourth best in program annals. Catie Coxon won the discus with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 150-feet, 6-inches, a performance that ranks third among the school's best. Johnson took second by throwing 134-11.

In other women's events, Sheena Simpkins was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.15, while her teammate Maureen Nweke took third in 2:26.47. Elia Francis placed second in the 400-meter dash (1:00.65) and Pony Sokiri was the runner-up in the triple jump (36-5.50). Rochelle Reid and Ashley Mahlmeister tied for third in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-1.

Wilfredo de Jesus Elias was a winner in the men's hammer throw as he registered a distance of 193-feet, 1-inch, the second-best effort in UAlbany history. de Jesus Elias, a senior, had previously qualified for the IC4A Championship with a toss of 186-9 at the Spring Break Classic in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on March 19.

Stephen Hassard finished second in the discus with a throw of 155-3. Matthew Catera was fourth in the decathlon by scoring 5,879 points, the eighth-highest total by a Great Dane competitor. In the ten-event competition, Catera won the 100-meters in 11.04 seconds and the 110-meter hurdles in 16.10.
