University of Albany's Jenn Pierson & Wilfredo de Jesus Elias Receive America East Weekly Track & Field Awards - UAlbany Sports 2011


Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Jenn Pierson and Wilfredo de Jesus Elias have been honored by the America East Conference on Tuesday, March 29 with the first weekly track and field awards of the 2011 outdoor campaign. Pierson was named the Female Track Performer of the Week. de Jesus Elias was chosen the Male Field Performer of the Week.

Pierson, the defending America East Conference champion, finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at North Carolina State's Raleigh Relays on March 25. Pierson ran the fourth-fastest time in program history when she was clocked in 10:53.96. A senior from Binghamton, N.Y., Pierson's time was a little under four seconds off the ECAC-qualifying standard. She placed 11th last year at the ECAC championship and advanced to the NCAA preliminary round.

de Jesus Elias won the men's hammer throw competition at Army's Dick Shea Open on March 26, as he registered a distance of 193-feet, 1-inch, the second-best performance in UAlbany history. de Jesus Elias had previously qualified for the IC4A Championship with a toss of 186-9 at the Spring Break Classic in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on March 19. The senior placed third in the hammer throw at the 2010 America East Championship after winning the event in 2009.
