UAlbany Baseball Drops Season Opener to Iowa 8-3

Clearwater, Fla. – Junior Nick Erdman pitched five scoreless innings to lead Iowa to an 8-3 non-conference baseball win over UAlbany in the season-opener for both teams on Friday night at the Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.

Iowa (1-0) got on the board with four runs with outs in the top of the second inning. Justin Brauer started the rally with a two-out double down the right field line. Following a hit batsman, Kevin Hoef drove in Brauer with a single down the left field line. Justin Toole followed with a two-run double down to left to give the Hawkeyes a 3-0 lead. Toole plated the fourth run of the inning on a double by Caleb Curry.

The Hawkeyes tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 6-0 lead. In the fifth, Kody McManis singled up the middle with two outs to plate Kyle Riffel from third. Iowa scored in the seventh during a pick-off attempt.

UAlbany (0-1) closed the gap to 6-3 with two runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth. In the seventh, junior Dave West followed a Brendan Rowland double with a two-run home run to left. Freshman Kyle Crean scored from second base in the eighth on an error by the third baseman.

Iowa added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to deliver the final score. Ben Geelan drove in the first run with a double to center and later scored on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt.

At the plate for the Great Danes, Rowland and juniors Ryan Gugel and Sean Donovan each registered two of the team’s nine hits.

Senior right-hander Casey Walsh took the loss for UAlbany, allowing five runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings to go along with six strikeouts. Senior Marco Rivera allowed one run over two and one-third innings, while freshman Dave Kubiak pitched the final two innings, yielding two runs. Erdman registered the win for Iowa, striking out eight over five scoreless innings, yielding just four hits.

UAlbany returns to the diamond for a 10:00 a.m. first pitch on Saturday against Liberty and face Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m.
