Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Luke Schoen and Kamilah McShine were each named the America East Conference Field Athlete of the Week in men’s and women’s track and field, respectively, as announced on Tuesday, Jan. 13 by the league office. Both Great Danes are being honored for the first time this season.
Schoen, a junior pole vaulter, broke his own school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship at the Yale Collegiate Invitational on Jan. 10. Schoen cleared 17-feet, one-inch to win the event, breaking his old standard of 16-8.75 set at Boston University’s Valentine Invitational last season. He posted the best mark by an America East student-athlete in the pole vault this winter by nearly two feet.
McShine placed second in the pentathlon with 3,259 points, a conference-best this year, at the Dartmouth Relays on Jan. 9. The senior co-captain, who holds the school record in the event, recorded the best finish of the 13 women’s competitors in the 60-meter high hurdles (8.93 seconds) as well as the long jump (16-8). In addition, she finished with the second-best mark in the 800-meter run (2:32.92). McShine, who finished 130 points behind Dartmouth’s Karen Woolley, also cleared 4-10.25 in the high jump and recorded a throw of 31-2.5 in the shot put.
