University of Albany's Abbey Wexel Earns America East Conference Volleyball Setter of the Week Honors - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Abbey Wexel was named the America East Conference Volleyball Setter of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is Wexel's first career weekly honor from the conference.

Wexel, who hails from Virginia Beach, Va., quarterbacked UAlbany to a 3-0 sweep of UMBC in the America East opener on Friday, Oct. 1. She finished with a double-double of 33 assists and 12 digs to go along with three kills and a team-high .750 hitting percentage. Wexel led UAlbany to a conference-best .262 team hitting percentage, while the Great Danes held UMBC to .087 hitting as a team.

UAlbany (10-5) will host non-conference opponent Colgate on Wednesday in a game that will be televised locally on Time Warner Cable (TWCS). Over Homecoming/Fall Festival Weekend, the Great Danes will host league foes Providence at 7 p.m. on Friday and New Hampshire at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

University of Albany FCS Football's Justinian Mason Chosen Northeast Conference Special Teams Player of the Week - UAlbany Sports 2010

Somerset, N.J. - University at Albany's Justinian Mason has been chosen Northeast Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in football, as announced on Monday, Oct. 4 by the conference office. Mason's efforts helped UAlbany defeated Yale, 23-20, as the program recorded its first-ever win over an Ivy League team.

Mason, a redshirt freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, was at the forefront of a superb all-around effort by UAlbany's special teams unit against Yale. The free safety scored a first-quarter touchdown and later made a drive-extending catch with the punt team on the field. He erased a 6-0 deficit when he scooped up a blocked punt and ran seven yards for a score with 3:31 left in the opening quarter. The play ignited a run of 17 unanswered points. With UAlbany lined up to punt on its first possession of the second period, Mason converted a 4th-and-5 situation by hauling in a 28-yard pass from Andrew Smith.

Mason, who was the first UAlbany player to run back a blocked punt for a touchdown since Oct. 13, 2000, is a member of the kickoff cover, kickoff return, punt cover and punt return units. The Great Danes limited Yale to an average of 19.4 yards on five kick returns and a total of nine yards on two punt returns.

University of Albany's Daphne Voormolen Named America East Conference Field Hockey Rookie of the Week - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Daphne Voormolen was named the America East Conference Field Hockey Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is Voormolen's second rookie of the week honor this season.

Voormolen, a native of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, finished the week with three goals and one assist on 13 shots to lead the 17th-ranked Great Danes to a 3-0 record for the week. In a 9-1 win over crosstown-rival Siena, the freshman forward scored two goals before adding one goal and one assist, on the game-winner, in a 3-2 victory over Providence.

UAlbany (10-2) will host conference foe Maine on Saturday and in-state rival Syracuse on Sunday over Homecoming/Fall Festival Weekend. The Great Danes take on the Black Bears at 4 p.m. on Saturday and face off against the Orange at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Daphne Voormolen Leads #17 University of Albany Field Hockey to a 3-2 Win Over Providence - UAlbany Sports 2010

Providence, R.I. - Freshman Daphne Voormolen scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner to lead #17 UAlbany to a 3-2 win over Providence in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Providence Field Hockey Complex.

Voormolen got the Great Danes on the board at 13:00, taking an assist from Alysia Hough and converting a hard shot from the top of the circle. Ashlyn Hudson tied the game for Providence in the 35th minute to send the teams to halftime knotted at 1-1. Hudson then assisted on Kelly Grogan's goal to start the second half, giving the Friars a 2-1 advantage. In the 46th minute, Corrine McConville tied the score at 2-2, taking assists from Christina Patrick and Ashlyn Bach on a direct corner shot at the top of the circle. Just over a minute later, Patrick took an assist from Voormolen to put the Great Danes back on top and seal up the win.

UAlbany outshot the Friars, 10-9, and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. Kathi Weidman went the distance in the cage for Providence (2-9), making four saves. Christine Hoffman and Kristi Troch split time in the cage for the Great Danes, with Hoffman making one save and Troch picking up her fifth win of the season.

UAlbany (10-2) will return to action on Saturday, hosting America East Conference opponent Maine in a Homecoming Weekend game at 4 p.m.

University of Albany FCS Football Upends Unbeaten Ivy League Yale - UAlbany Sports 2010

New Haven, Conn. - Freshman tailback Dillon Romain scored on a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, and UAlbany held on for a 23-20 non-conference victory over Yale on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the historic Yale Bowl. The two teams were meeting for the first time.

UAlbany (2-2) put together a 14-play, 80-yard drive in the final period for what proved to be the winning points. Quarterback Dan Di Lella twice connected on third-down throws to keep the sequence alive. His 10-yard completion to Nick Hutcherson gave his team a first down at the Yale 27. Di Lella later hit fullback Justin Petersen in the left flat for nine yards to the one-yard line. Romain blasted over right guard for the score, but the extra point was missed right and the Great Danes had a 23-13 lead.

Yale (2-1) cut into the margin on a short drive that was assisted by two personal foul penalties. Quarterback Pat Witt drilled a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chris Smith, who was wide open in the back corner of the right end zone with 4:19 to play. The Bulldogs attempted an on-side kick, but the ball was illegally touched. UAlbany's offense was later held on fourth down at the Yale 17. The Great Danes' defense stiffened and cornerback Leon Saddler broke up a fourth-down pass to preserve the victory.

"We played hard and fairly intelligent for fifty minutes," said UAlbany coach Bob Ford, whose program had suffered setbacks in its previous three games with Ivy League teams. "After the first drive, we pretty much controlled first downs. When you take away the run, the play-calling is entirely different."

In the first half, special teams dominated the action with big plays and mistakes. The Bulldogs marched 10 plays to the end zone with the opening kickoff. Witt, who hit on 21-of-46 through the air for 246 yards, threw a pair of third-down completions, before connecting with tight end Jordan Forney on a 24-yard scoring pass. Forney leaped over a defender to make the catch at the goal line. The extra-point was blocked by UAlbany linebacker Jon Morgan.

UAlbany came up empty with a 12-play drive on its first possession when Herb Glass missed a 24-yard field goal to the right. However, defensive tackle Trevor Anderson picked up his team when he broke through to block Alex Barnes' punt and safety Justinian Mason raced to paydirt with the loose ball from the seven-yard line for a 7-6 lead.

A Paul Layton kick that was downed at the one-yard line backed up the Yale offense and forced Barnes to punt from his own end zone. UAlbany took advantage as Di Lella fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to freshman receiver Jameel Gay with 2:28 left in the quarter. Outside linebacker Chris Blais followed with a 35-yard interception return that led to Glass' 25-yard field goal and a 17-6 lead.

The Bulldogs, who were off to their best start since 2007, came up with some special teams' trickery on the final play of the half to close the gap. Witt, a Nebraska transfer, scrambled from midfield 22 yards into UAlbany territory with one second remaining. Yale lined up for a 45-yard field goal attempt, but Forney, as the holder, took the snap and rumbled over the left side before stretching across the goal line on a 28-yard touchdown run.

"This was very important for us," UAlbany defensive end Eddie Delaney offered. "We told everyone to calm down (at halftime) and to get ready for the second half. We used a blitz package and got good pressure. We were trying to shut down the run and make them pass."

The Bulldogs, who were receiving votes in The Sports Network national poll, looked to take the lead in third quarter. Using a double-reverse, flea-flicker play, Witt hit wideout Gio Christodoulou with a 45-yard pass to the UAlbany 2. But the Great Danes kept the threat off the scoreboard. Linebacker Said Gaida defended a third-down throw and Barnes' 20-yard field goal attempt was blocked with 2:19 left in the quarter.

"This is a great place (the Yale Bowl)," said UAlbany captain and center Andy Sparano, whose rushing attack was led by Andrew Smith (67 yards) and Romain (51 yards). "We needed a spark and we can build on this momentum going back into conference play."

University of Albany Sweeps UMBC to Start America East Conference Volleyball Schedule - UAlbany Sports 2010

Baltimore, Md. - Teresa Coppiellie led all players with 10 kills as UAlbany swept UMBC, 3-0, in the America East Conference volleyball opener at RAC Arena on Friday evening. The Great Danes defeated the Retrievers with scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-18.

Coppiellie was one dig short of a double-double, while setter Abbey Wexel reached double-digits in both assists and digs, with 33 and 12, respectively. Casey Wright and Traci Vandegrift recorded nine kills apiece, while Vandegrift also totaled 10 digs. Wright also finished with a match-high .389 hitting percentage along with two service aces and three blocks. Libero Laurie Gonzalez totaled 12 digs for the Great Danes, who held the Retrievers to a .087 hitting percentage.

UMBC (4-11, AE 0-1) was led by Ali Loynachan with six kills and seven digs, while also recording two block assists. Setter Alexandra Spaay finished with a double-double of 23 assists and 10 digs, while libero Hallie Carter led the Retrievers with 11 digs. Sabrina Hoeks totaled seven digs, three kills and two service aces.

UAlbany (10-5, AE 1-0) will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 6, hosting non-conference opponent Colgate at University Gym in a match that will be televised on Time Warner Cable (TW3) at 7 p.m.

UAlbany FCS Football Makes First-Ever Trip to Historic Yale Bowl Against Undefeated Ivy League Opponent - UAlbany Sports 2010

New Haven, Conn. - UAlbany concludes the non-conference portion of the 2010 schedule by meeting Ivy League opponent Yale for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is 12 noon. Fans can listen to the game on Fox Sports 980, WOFX-AM, with Rodger Wyland and Erik Elken handling the broadcast.

Yale (2-0) is receiving votes in the Sports Network FCS national poll after opening with victories over Georgetown and Cornell. Head coach Tom Williams, a former Jacksonville Jaguars' assistant, guides the nation's second-ranked offense (493.0 yards per game). QB Pat Witt (6-4, 220) has connected on 53 of 87 passes for 639 yards and three touchdowns. The Nebraska transfer is fifth nationally in total offense. RB Alex Thomas is among the top rushers at the FCS level by running for 107.0 yards per game. He scored the go-ahead touchdown in last week's 21-7 league victory at Cornell. WR Gio Christodoulou had nine catches for 124 yards in the season opener.

DB Adam Money earned first-team All-Ivy League recognition last season. His interception on the first play of the third quarter was the turning point in last Saturday's Cornell contest. LB Jordan Haynes leads the defense with 21 tackles and two fumble recoveries. DE Sean Williams (6-3, 225) and DT Joe Young (6-3, 280) were honorable mention all-league performers one year ago.

UAlbany (1-2) is coming off a 28-17 loss at Duquesne in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams. TB Andrew Smith leads the offense as he averages 129.5 all-purpose yards. The sophomore scored on a pair of 3-yard runs last week. FS Justin Hassan is the top tackler with 17 on a unit that ranks 26th nationally in rushing yards allowed (113.0 per game). ILB Chris Wilk and OLB Chris Blais have made 16 tackles apiece.

Yale Bowl:

University of Albany Goalkeeper Christian Mejia Earns Spot on Puerto Rico's Senior National Soccer Team - UAlbany Sports 2010

San Juan, P.R. - University at Albany's Christian Mejia earned a spot on the Puerto Rico National Men's Soccer team and will represent his country at the Digicel Caribbean Cup from Oct. 2-6, as announced by the Puerto Rico Football Federation. The junior goalkeeper, who also played for Puerto Rico's U-21 squad over the summer, is the only current America East Conference men's soccer player to be called up to represent his country's Senior National Team.

Mejia, who did not yield a goal when he made his Great Dane debut in the second half against San Diego State on Sept. 26, will be a part of Puerto Rico's squad during round-robin group play. Group A will be made up of Anguilla, the Cayman Islands, St. Martin and Puerto Rico and play all of its matches at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, P.R. Mejia and the Puerto Rico squad will compete against Anguilla on Oct. 2, St. Martin on Oct. 4 and the Cayman Islands on Oct. 6.

The Digicel Caribbean Cup is the qualifying tournament for next year's CONCACAF Gold Cup, which is the main association football competition to determine the regional champion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The top four teams at the Digicel Caribbean Cup will automatically qualify for the Gold Cup.

University of Albany Men's Soccer Rallies From Behind Three Times in 4-3 Double-Overtime Loss to Holy Cross - UAlbany Sports 2010

Albany, N.Y. - Jon Werth scored two goals, including the game-winning tally, to lift Holy Cross to a 4-3 double-overtime victory over UAlbany in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Varsity Field. Capped by Christoffer Nisser's first career marker with under five minutes left in regulation, the Great Danes rallied to tie the match three times before Werth punched in the golden goal midway through the second extra session.

UAlbany controlled play for the duration of the overtime periods by outshooting Holy Cross, 5-3, and holding a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. However, Werth propelled the Crusaders to the sudden victory when he potted in a rebound following a shot taken from the left corner by Jordan Michael in the 104th minute.

Holy Cross (3-4-1), which never trailed in the match, got on the board first when Werth sent a direct kick from 30 yards away to the lower left corner of the net in the 18th minute. Werth appeared to double the Crusader lead in the 28th minute after he blasted in Michael's cross on an indirect kick taken from just outside the box, but the senior midfielder was whistled for being offside.

Following a quiet first half, the teams traded five goals in a 30-minute span during the second frame to extend the match beyond regulation time. Bo Jelovac tied the match up at 1-1 in the 57th minute by unleashing a laser from outside of the box past goalkeeper Evan Polanik. After the Crusaders went ahead by netting another goal on a direct kick, Jelovac helped knot the score up again at 2-2 by centering a short cross into the six-yard box that was finished by Ian Peach.

Kevin O'Connell scored in the 76th minute to give Holy Cross a 3-2 lead, but the Great Danes did not give up and were able to get the equalizer they needed to force overtime. Nisser, a freshman defender, took advantage of his direct kick in the 86th minute by bending a shot around a wall of Crusader defenders that landed in the right corner of the net. Despite a valiant effort to come from behind on three occasions, the Great Danes were dealt their third straight loss by surrendering a fourth goal nearly 18 minutes later.

UAlbany outshot Holy Cross, 23-17, and held a commanding 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Adrian Foncette made four saves on 17 opportunities for the Great Danes, while Polanik earned the victory by turning away eight of the 23 shots he faced for the Crusaders.

UAlbany (4-5-0) opens America East Conference play when it visits Hartford on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.

17th-Ranked University of Albany Rolls to 9-1 Field Hockey Victory Over Crosstown-Rival Siena - UAlbany Sports 2010

Albany, N.Y. - Alysia Hough led three players with two goals each, as #17 UAlbany defeated crosstown-rival Siena, 9-1, in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field. Hough, along with Tessa Knapp and Daphne Voormolen all scored two goals apiece to pace the Great Danes.

Siena got on the board first, as Lisa Heimerle took a crossing pass from Cory dela Gorgendiere and tipped the ball into the back of the cage. Hough responded with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute off a rebound. Once the Great Danes got on the scoreboard, they continued to rally, with Knapp and Nina Walters adding goals before the halftime break. Knapp scored her first goal at 25:46, as Walters dribbled across the cage and handed the ball off for the score. Walters then deflected a pass from Suzy Clephane into the upper left corner of the cage in the 32nd minute to give UAlbany a 3-1 lead at the half.

Voormolen and Corrine McConville added back-to-back unassisted goals within two minutes of each other to start the second half. Senior Ashlyn Bach then scored her first career goal in the 57th minute on a penalty stroke, before Hough and Knapp tallied their second goals of the day. Hough took a breakaway into a one-on-one with the goalkeeper for UAlbany's seventh goal, while Knapp converted a rebound into a goal in the 63rd minute. Voormolen wrapped up the Great Danes' scoring at 63:40, taking assists from Clephane and Knapp on a penalty corner.

UAlbany outshot Siena, 41-1, and held a 15-0 advantage in penalty corners. University of Albany's Christina Patrick & Corrine McConville Earn America East Weekly Field Hockey Awards - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Christina Patrick and Corrine McConville were named the America East Conference Field Hockey Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is the first weekly award for both players.

Patrick, who leads the Great Danes in goals with eight and points with 19, led UAlbany to three straight wins last week. She scored at least one goal in each game, finishing with four tallies and one assist on 14 shots. Patrick scored two goals in a 6-1 road win over Saint Louis and finished with one goal and one assist in a shutout win over Bryant at home. She wrapped up the week with the lone goal needed to defeat Massachusetts on the road, finding the back of the cage on a tough-angle shot in the 53rd minute.

McConville scored three goals in three games on a team-high 18 shots. She scored once in the victory at Saint Louis and notched two goals, including the game-winner, in the 3-0 win over Bryant. Both goals against the Bulldogs came on penalty corner opportunities for the Great Danes, with McConville taking hard, direct shots on the goal from the top of the circle. The rookie has 10 total points on the season, and leads the conference with 42 shots.

19th-ranked UAlbany (7-2) has been in the national poll for three consecutive weeks. The Great Danes will return to action on Tuesday, hosting crosstown-rival Siena at Alumni Turf Field at 4 p.m.

PAW PRINTS: UAlbany's game versus Siena on Tuesday will be a "Stick it to Cancer" game to raise money for the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Immediately following the game, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Great Danes will be hosting a clinic for youth field hockey players in the seventh and eighth grades. The cost is $5 per player, and all proceeds will go to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

Christina Patrick Scores in 53rd Minute to Lead University of Albany Field Hockey to 1-0 Win at UMass - UAlbany Sports 2010

Amherst, Mass. - Junior forward Christina Patrick scored her eighth goal of the season to lead #19 UAlbany to 1-0 shutout win over Massachusetts in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. The Great Danes improved to 7-2 with the win, while the Minutewomen fell to 4-6 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, Patrick would score the only goal of the game in the 54th minute, taking an assist from sophomore Nina Walters. Walters self-started the play from the right side of the circle. She sent over a cross that slipped through UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdall, finding Patrick on the opposite post for the finish.

The Great Danes got some late heroics with under five minutes left to play. After UAlbany goalkeeper Kristi Troch charged out, sophomore defender Taylor Luke sprinted back from the top left of the circle to make a diving defensive save off the right post to preserve the victory.

"This was a game that came down to the wire," said head coach Phil Sykes, whose team has now won four of its last five games. "It's always a grudge match between these two teams. This was a very good effort. We won with great team defense and battled really hard down the stretch. Both goalies played very well under extreme pressure situations."

UAlbany goalkeepers Christine Hoffman and Troch combined for their second straight shutout. Hoffman made four saves in the first half, while Troch made two in the second frame to preserve the win. UMass goalkeeper Widdall made four saves for the Minutewomen in 70 minutes of action. UAlbany outshot UMass, 13-11, while UMass held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

UAlbany will return to action on Tuesday Sept. 28 to host crosstown-rival Siena for a matchup at 4 p.m. The Great Danes will be hosting their Stick it to Cancer match against the Saints, as the teams will look to raise money and awareness for the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR).

University of Albany Volleyball Takes Second Match in Home-and-Home Weekend Series With Yale - UAlbany Sports 2010

Albany, N.Y. - Senior Teresa Coppiellie recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Dunja Prgomet also finished with a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs to lead UAlbany to a 3-2 win over Yale at University Gym in the Great Danes' home opener. A rematch of last night's 3-1 Yale victory in New Haven, UAlbany battled back to win the five-set match with scores of 15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-8.

Along with the strong offensive and defensive play of Coppiellie and Prgomet, UAlbany received 13 kills on a .429 hitting percentage from Traci Vandegrift, who also added seven digs and a service ace. Casey Wright added 14 kills and six total blocks, including five solos. Libero Laurie Gonzalez totaled 15 digs and accounted for five of the Great Danes' 12 service aces, while Abbey Wexel doled out 39 assists to go along with nine digs and two service aces, quarterbacking UAlbany to a .259 team hitting percentage.

Yale (6-5) also had four players with double-digit kill totals, including three with 17. Katie Cordell led the Bulldogs across the board, smacking 17 kills on a .517 hitting percentage to go along with a match-high 23 digs. Kendal Polan finished with a triple-double of 17 kills, 34 assists and 10 digs, while Erica Reetz totaled 17 kills and 12 digs. Haley Wessels was the final Bulldog in double-digit kill figures with 12, while Kerry Clavadetscher just missed out on a double-double with 30 assists and nine digs.

UAlbany (9-5) will return to action on Friday, Oct. 1, visiting UMBC to kick off America East Conference play.

UAlbany FCS Football Meets Duquesne in Pittsburgh to Start Northeast Conference Play on Saturday - UAlbany Sports 2010

Pittsburgh, Pa. - UAlbany begins Northeast Conference play when the Great Danes head to Duquesne on Saturday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is 12:00 p.m. at Rooney Athletic Field. Fans can listen to the game on Fox Sports 980, WOFX-AM, with Rodger Wyland handling the play-by-play coverage.

Duquesne (2-1, NEC 0-0) is off to a solid start with wins over Bucknell (17-13) and Pioneer Football League preseason favorite Dayton (35-31). Delaware, one of the nation's top FCS teams, handed the Dukes their first loss of the season one week ago. Head coach Jerry Schmitt leads his team into its third season of NEC competition.

Quarterback Sean Patterson, who is 23rd nationally in total yards at 261.7 per game, can run and pass. The left-hander has thrown for 671 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite targets are a pair of Michigan State transfers. Connor Dixon, a converted quarterback, has 16 catches for 209 yards and one TD. Dave Williams totals 15 receptions for 129 yards and one score. RB Larry McCoy was one of the top FCS freshman rushers last year. He has 261 yards and two TDs on the ground through three games.

The Dukes have 17 returning starters, including 10 on defense. Dave Opfar, who served as Saint Francis' head coach the last eight seasons, has joined the Duquesne staff as defensive coordinator. LB Nathan Totino is a three-year starter in his team's 3-4 scheme. He is fifth among active FCS defenders with 315 career tackles. DE Thaimu Bangura (6-3, 278) and Totino are each on the preseason All-NEC squad.

The Great Danes have been off for two weeks since being overpowered by No. 10 Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. UAlbany (1-1, NEC 0-0) is playing its opening four games on the road and traveling nearly 6,000 miles and to four states in that stretch.

QB Dan Di Lella had connected on 53.6 percent of his pass attempts for 290 yards in two starting assignments. TB Andrew Smith, who missed his last start due to injury, returns to the lineup after rushing for a career-high 129 yards in the opener at Maine. ILB Chris Wilk (11 tackles) and OLB Chris Blais (10 tackles) are the leading tacklers.

Albany, N.Y. - Freshman forward Corrine McConville scored two goals, while Suzy Clephane added two assists to lead #19 UAlbany to a 3-0 win over Bryant in non-conference field hockey action on Friday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field.

McConville scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute on a penalty corner, taking assists from Clephane and Chelsea Neff. McConville was stationed at the top of the circle for the direct shot on goal, getting the ball past Bryant goalkeeper Jennifer Gullotti. The rookie doubled the Great Danes' score with her fourth goal of the season before halftime on another penalty corner opportunity. Patrick insterted the ball to Clephane, who stopped the pass and allowed McConville to drill a shot into the right corner of the cage.

The Great Danes finished off the scoring in the first two minutes of play in the second half, as Patrick gathered the a loose ball in front of the cage and finished with an unassisted shot into the back of the net. UAlbany outshot the Bulldogs, 27-2, and held a 13-1 advantage in penalty corners. UAlbany goalkeepers Christine Hoffman and Kristi Troch combined for the shutout, while Gullotti made eight saves in the cage for Bryant (0-8).

UAlbany (6-2) will return to action on Sunday, visiting Massachusetts, a team that is receiving votes in the national poll, starting at 2 p.m.

Empire State Development (ESD) and the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) today announced the merger of two of New York State's Centers of Excellence- Infotonics Technology Center (ITC) in Canandaigua and the Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnology at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) in Albany. Empire State Development and NYSTAR will invest up to $10 million to the merged operation, the Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center (STC), which will be managed and supported by CNSE.

The merger and the addition of new processing capabilities at ITC and CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex situate New York State for significant private sector job creation and investment in all areas of advanced manufacturing across the state. University of Albany Women's Soccer Blanks Bryant - UAlbany Sports 2010

Breanna Maggio Records Fifth Career Shutout in Women's Soccer's 2-0 Win Over Bryant.

Smithfield, R.I. - Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Maggio eclipsed the Division I program record for career shutouts by making five saves in leading the UAlbany women's soccer team to a 2-0 road victory over Bryant on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at Bulldog Stadium.

UAlbany, which was playing its second straight Northeast Conference opponent, scored on its first shot of the match in the fourth minute and never looked back. Following a corner kick, Chelsea DeVerna finished a pass from Kendra Harrell-Vigil to quickly put the Great Danes ahead by a 1-0 score. Maggio saved the only shot the Bulldogs attempted in the first half to keep the hosts off the scoreboard heading into the break.

Trailing by a goal, Bryant (2-6-1) came out stronger in the second half by taking aim at Maggio four times early in the frame. However, the Great Danes were able to double their lead in the 67th minute when Aubrey VanGorder stole the ball away from the Bulldog goalkeeper and scored on an open net. It was the freshman's first career goal and provided all the insurance the Great Danes needed to pull out the two-goal victory.

Maggio made five saves on eight chances in the winning effort for UAlbany, which has blanked four of its 10 opponents this season. She also improved her record to 4-2 overall. Bryant's Kelsi Jacob turned away two of the 11 shots she faced and suffered the loss.

UAlbany (5-5-0) opens up America East Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. when it hosts Stony Brook.
Paw Prints: Breanna Maggio, who has made at least fives saves in four of her six starts this season, became the first UAlbany goalkeeper to register her fifth career shutout since the program upgraded to Division I status in 1999 ... Three Athletes & One Coach Will Be Enshrined Into UAlbany Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 8

Albany, N.Y. - Three former athletes and one legendary head coach will be enshrined into the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 8 at the 27th annual HOF Dinner and Induction Ceremony. A reception for the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees begins at 5:30 p.m., with the dinner and ceremony to follow in SEFCU Arena on campus.

The induction ceremony is part of Homecoming/Fall Festival Weekend, which also includes Saturday's football game at University Field against Northeast Conference-rival Saint Francis, Pa. at 1:00 p.m. On Friday, volleyball battles Providence at 7 p.m. On Saturday, men's soccer hosts Stony Brook at 11 a.m. and field hockey meets Maine at 4 p.m. Sunday events feature volleyball vs. New Hampshire at 1 p.m. and field hockey vs. Syracuse at 2 p.m.

The new inductees and their sports: Mike Cinque '87, basketball; Joe McCullen '92, cross country/track & field; Valerie Terry '02, softball; and R.K. Munsey, who served as the school's first cross country and track & field coach from 1962-85.
With this year's class, there are 128 former athletes, coaches and administrators who have been inducted into the University at Albany's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mike Cinque (1985-87) -- One of the top point guards in the UAlbany basketball program's NCAA Division III history, Cinque helped the Great Danes earn a pair of ECAC Upstate New York Tournament appearances in his two-year career.

Cinque averaged 12.9 points, 6.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals as a senior when UAlbany advanced to the 1987 ECAC championship final against Hamilton. He totaled 13 points and 10 assists in an opening-round win over Hartwick and added 17 points in a 73-72 victory over Plattsburgh in the semifinal round. He captained the team to a 21-7 record.

Cinque, who shared team MVP honors for the second consecutive year, was selected honorable mention All-East by Eastern Basketball Magazine and was named to the All-ECAC Upstate and All-SUNY Athletic Conference squads. He nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in an 86-76 victory over Rensselaer, plus netted 20-plus points in three other contests.

After transferring from Division II Adelphi University, Cinque established single-season records for assists (197) and assists average (7.3 pg) in his first year with the UAlbany program. He also averaged 11.1 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 52.5 percent from the field. The Great Danes went 18-9 overall.

Cinque is still among UAlbany's best in the record book. He is fourth in assists (389) and first in career assists average (7.1 pg). Cinque is sixth in career steals (149) and first in steals average at 2.71 per game. As a high school standout, he led John S. Burke High to the 1983 Class B State championship final and earned first-team all-state honors.

A native of Monroe, N.Y., Cinque earned a B.A. in economics from UAlbany and went on to receive a master's from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. He serves as vice president of SuperValu/Target TBT for Coca Cola Enterprises in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. He and his wife, Aileen, have three daughters, Shea, Mairead and Kiernan.

Joe McCullen (1988-92) -- A national competitor in cross country and track and field, McCullen was the top middle-distance runner of the UAlbany program's NCAA Division III era.

McCullen helped the Great Danes finish tenth at the 1992 NCAA outdoor championships after taking second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.74. As a senior, he would lead UAlbany to Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) championships in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. UAlbany captured its third consecutive CTC outdoor crown. In addition, he led his team to the NYSCT&FA state championship in Rochester by placing first in both the 800m and 1,500m events. McCullen would receive the school's 1991-92 Male Athlete of the Year award for his efforts.

At the 1992 NCAA indoor meet held at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, McCullen took fourth in the 1,500-meter run (3:56.51) and led the 4x400-meter relay to a fifth-place finish (3:21.32) as the Great Danes tied for sixth in the team standings. During the indoor season, he became the first UAlbany athlete to compete at the Millrose Games and was third in the IC4A College Mile at Madison Square Garden. He earned All-East recognition at the IC4A competition, won the CTC 1,000-meter run and established a school record in the mile run (4:10.57).

In 1991 at the NCAA outdoors, McCullen placed eighth in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3:52.23 in leading his squad to a seventh-place showing. He held six school records upon graduation. Additionally, McCullen helped UAlbany tie for sixth at the 1991 NCAA Division III cross country nationals at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He placed 71st among 177 competitors in 25:57.

A native of Albany, N.Y. and a graduate of Bishop Maginn High School, McCullen earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics with a minor in business administration. McCullen has worked for 16 years as director of inventory control for TransWorld Entertainment. He has one daughter, Brooke, and two sons, Kyle and Jared.

R.K. Munsey (1958-85) -- The architect of the school's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field programs, R.K. Munsey started the group of sports in the 1960s and molded them into consistent winners with championship teams.

The sport of cross country started as a club program before moving to varsity status in 1962 under Munsey's guidance. The Great Danes went on to win five SUNY Athletic Conference championships in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1977 and 1984. Munsey coached UAlbany to a second-place finish at the 1973 NCAA Division III Championship in Wheaton, Illinois. His teams appeared in 11 NCAA championship meets, including six top-20 finishes, and registered victories over Division I opponents Syracuse and Army.

Munsey's cross country teams would post a 208-80 record for a .722 winning percentage during his 23 years at the helm. The Great Danes recorded ten 10-plus win seasons, including 13 victories in 1977 and a pair of 12-win campaigns. UAlbany put together two win streaks of 30 consecutive dual matches. Twelve runners have been chosen to the SUNY Athletic Conference Cross Country Hall of Fame. He was also the founder of the UAlbany Cross Country Invitational, a regional meet that will be held on campus in October for the 44th year. The men's varsity race is named in his honor.

As a track & field coach, Munsey had a 137-34-1 dual-meet record in 18 outdoor seasons and added another 63 wins on the indoor circuit. After beginning the program in 1968, he developed five All-Americans, James Shrader, Rudy Vido, Carlo Cherubino, Vinny Reda and Marc Mercurio. Munsey also coached indoor track for 15 seasons.

Munsey, who arrived on UAlbany's Downtown Campus in the late 1950s as the head of student housing and student employees, has had full and varied life experiences. These began when he worked on the Alaska Highway for 10 months after Pearl Harbor before graduating from Denver East High School. As a veteran of World War II, Munsey served in the United States Army Air Corps for nearly three years. He retired in the spring of 1985 from coaching and as a professor emeritus on the physical education faculty. Throughout his career he was known for his dedication to education and his deep concern for the student-athlete.

Coach Munsey's life has also been balanced. Besides being the first official historian for NCAA Division III track and field, he has been a creative artist in pastel drawing and stained glass and participated in an archeological dig in Arizona, uncovering the Hopee Indian culture. His interests include water rafting, opera and the history of the American West.

Munsey has spent much of his retirement in the state of Montana. He earned a B.S. in social science with minors in history and education from the University of Denver in 1949 and a master's in guidance and student personnel from Columbia University Teachers College in 1958.

Valerie Terry (1999-02) -- A shortstop and the school's all-time leader in stolen bases, Terry was a key figure in softball's transition from the NCAA Division II to Division I level. She led the Great Danes to a pair of 30-plus win campaigns and ECAC post-season appearances in both NCAA classifications.

As a freshman, Terry helped UAlbany win the 1999 ECAC Division II Mid-Atlantic championship and post a 33-14 record. She batted .350 with 45 runs, 12 extra-base hits, 32 stolen bases and 31 RBIs. A second-team All-New England Collegiate Conference selection, she led the conference in runs and stolen bases.

In 2000, UAlbany finished 27-9 in its first Division I season while competing as an independent. Terry hit for a .330 average and led the team in triples (4) and sacrifice hits (11). As a junior, Terry ranked 26th nationally by hitting .403 and was second in stolen bases. Her 49 steals is the top single-season total in school annals and she still has the top three marks in that category. She also scored 49 runs, a single-season standard at the time. Her top offensive game came against Maryland-Eastern Shore, when she totaled four hits and four RBIs.

UAlbany became a member of the America East Conference in her senior season. The Great Danes qualified for the 2002 conference tournament and put together a 30-20 record. Terry batted .306 and ranked seventh among the NCAA leaders in stolen bases (1.09 pg), plus scored 29 runs.

A starter in all 178 games played, Terry completed her collegiate career as the program's all-time leader in runs (148), stolen bases (129), triples (16) and total hits (198). She continues to hold the career marks in steals and triples. Terry, who had three or more hits against 16 opponents as a collegian, is currently fifth in career batting average (.348). In addition, she had 23 doubles, 76 RBIs and a career .904 fielding percentage.

Terry, who hails from South Glens Falls, N.Y., received her undergraduate degree in sociology with a minor in education. She has worked for the last six years as an investigator for Washington County Child Protective Services. Terry lives with her family, Jason Ives and daughter, Sydney. Her parents, Mark and Cindy, reside in Whitehall, N.Y.

UAlbany's Alex Leuchanka Named America East Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Alex Leuchanka was named the America East Conference Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week, as announced on Tuesday, Sept. 21 by the league office. The sophomore is being recognized by the conference for the first time this season and second time of his career.

In a competitive field stacked with 10 Division I teams which were regionally ranked by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Leuchanka led UAlbany to a third-place finish among 19 schools at the 16th Annual Br. "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions. The meet was hosted by Iona College at Van Cortlandt Park. He placed ninth overall in the field of 207 runners by navigating the 8,000-meter circuit in 25:26.84. UAlbany, which had four sophomores among its top-five finishers, placed ahead of seven regionally-ranked institutions, including Kentucky.

The Great Danes will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 to compete at the George Mason Invitational at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va.
Paw Prints: UAlbany's men's and women's cross country programs were ranked 13th and 15th, respectively, in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Polls released on Sept. 20 ... Fulbright Scholars Highlight Wide Range of UAlbany Academic Excellence

Six distinguished researchers at the University at Albany will bring their academic expertise to Europe, Mexico and Africa after being named Fulbright Scholars for 2010-2011. Representing the College of Arts and Sciences, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the College of Computing and Information, the School of Education, and the School of Public Health, UAlbany's Fulbright Scholars join a select group of higher-education faculty and professionals from around the nation who travel abroad in an effort to help build mutual understanding between the citizens of the U.S. and other countries.

"The University at Albany is home to some of the best and brightest scholars in the world and we are honored to have five of our colleagues recognized as Fulbright Scholars," said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Susan D. Phillips. "Their dedication and recognition enhances the University's reach and reputation as one of the top research universities in the United States."

Christina Patrick Scores Two Goals to Lead University of Albany Field Hockey to 6-1 Win Over St. Louis - UAlbany Sports 2010

Fenton, Mo. - Junior forward Christina Patrick scored two goals, and Nina Walters added one goal and one assist to lead #19 UAlbany to a 6-1 win over St. Louis in non-conference field hockey action at the Anheuser-Busch Center on Monday afternoon.

Walters scored the first goal of the game, an unassisted shot following a rebound, just 7:05 into the game. St. Louis tied the score at 1-1 ten minutes later, as Lauryn Smith sent a crossing pass to Nicole Kent, who sent a hard shot into the lower left corner of the cage. UAlbany would regain the lead late in the first half, as Chelsea Neff connected on a shot into the left side of the cage to put the Great Danes ahead, 2-1, heading into halftime.

UAlbany would roll through the second half of play, led by freshman Corrine McConville, who sent an unassisted shot past St. Louis goalkeeper Alex LaBarge in the 50th minute of play. Patrick netted her first goal of the day less than three minutes later, taking a pass from Walters and lifting the ball over the LaBarge into the right side of the cage. Freshman Daphne Voormolen added a tally in the 66th minute with an unassisted breakaway goal before Patrick netted a last-minute score off a defensive turnover to set the final score.

UAlbany dominated the offensive game, outshooting the Billikens, 41-7, and holding a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. UAlbany starter Christine Hoffman made four saves for the Great Danes in the cage, while Kristi Troch stopped St. Louis' only shot of the second half. The Billikens' LaBarge made 18 saves in 66 minutes of action, while Katherine Deem stopped eight UAlbany shots in less than four minutes of play for St. Louis (0-9).

UAlbany (5-2) will return to action on Friday, hosting Bryant at 3 p.m.

University of Albany's Casey Wright and Kaley Jacobson Earn America East Weekly Volleyball Awards - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University of Albany's Casey Wright was named the America East Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Freshman setter Kaley Jacobson was named the conference's setter of the week, the first time she earned the award after two rookie of the week honors. A UAlbany player has won player of the week three out of the first four weeks of the season.

Wright was named the most valuable player of the Lamar Tournament over the weekend after averaging 4.60 kills, 1.50 digs and 1.50 blocks per set to go along with a .379 hitting percentage. Her kills, blocks and hitting percentage were all the top marks from across the conference. Her best performance of the weekend came in the Great Danes' 3-1 win over McNeese State, in which she was one dig and two blocks shy of a triple-double. She recorded a career-high 25 kills in the match, along with nine digs, eight blocks and a .449 hitting percentage. She also finished with double-digit kills in a 3-0 sweep of Louisiana-Lafayette, smashing 14 kills on .357 hitting. She earned all-tournament team honors for the third time this season.

Jacobson continued to lead the Great Danes with a conference-best 11.40 assists per set over the weekend. En route to the Lamar Tournament team title, UAlbany hit a league-best .240 thanks to Jacobson's setting. The rookie also averaged 1.80 digs per set and recorded four blocks and three service aces. Jacobson recorded 40 assists in each of Saturday's wins after opening up the tournament with a 34-assist performance against Louisiana-Lafayette. She also added nine digs, three blocks and an ace in the weekend finale against Lamar.

Tournament MVP Casey Wright Leads University of Albany Volleyball to an Undefeated Weekend in Texas - UAlbany Sports 2010

Beaumont, Texas - Casey Wright was named the most valuable player of the Lamar Volleyball Tournament after leading UAlbany to two wins on the final day of play at McDonald Gym on Saturday. The Great Danes defeated McNeese State, 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16), before sweeping the host Cardinals, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 29-27).

Against McNeese State, Wright recorded a career-high 25 kills on a .449 hitting percentage to go along with nine digs and eight total blocks. Teresa Coppiellie finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs, while Laurie Gonzalez totaled a match-high 26 digs. Traci Vandegrift, who was also named to the all-tournament team, started off the day with 12 digs to go along with seven kills, seven block assists and two service aces. Setter Kaley Jacobson handed out 40 assists and six digs, while Abbey Wexel added 11 digs defensively for UAlbany.

McNeese State (4-8) was led by Priscilla Massengale with 14 kills and a team-high 20 digs. Erin Huckabay added 12 kills, while Becky Bekelja finished with a double-double of 42 assists and 17 digs. Katie Kennedy and Whitney Ellisor also recorded double-digit kills, with 19 and 13, respectively. McNeese State finished with just three total team blocks, while UAlbany had 17 total blocks, and the Great Danes held the Cowgirls to a .082 hitting percentage.

In the tournament finale, Coppiellie led UAlbany with 17 kills, while Dunja Prgomet added 11 kills. Coppiellie completed a double-double with 12 digs, while all-tournament team selection Laurie Gonzalez paced the team defensively with 15 digs. Coppiellie and Gonzalez also combined for five of the team's seven aces, as Coppiellie served up three, with Gonzalez adding two. Jacobson tallied 40 assists, nine digs and four block assists, while Wright wrapped up the tournament with a seven-kill, four-block performance, along with four digs.

Lamar was led by Sierra Whitaker and Jayme Bazile with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Bailey Smith led the Cardinals defensively with a team-high 16 digs, while Megan McStravick and Kaleigh Wright finished with 11 digs apiece. Alex Morford and Kaylee Piat recorded 24 and 16 assists, respectively for Lamar (5-7).

UAlbany (8-4) will return to action on Friday, Sept. 24, visiting Yale in non-conference action, before hosting the Bulldogs in a return match to open the home season at University Gym on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Jelovac's Goal, Foncette's Six Saves Lead University of Albany Men's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Over Hartwick - UAlbany Sports 2010

Oneonta, N.Y. - Forward Bo Jelovac scored his second goal of the season and goalkeeper Adrian Foncette made six saves in leading UAlbany to a 1-0 victory over Hartwick in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Elmore Field.

UAlbany had the first golden opportunity to score for either side when Milos Jankovic was awarded a penalty kick in the 12th minute. However, Hartwick goalkeeper Jake Wright came away with the save after the senior midfielder's hard shot hit off the post to keep the match scoreless. Later in the half, the Great Danes got on the scoreboard with the only goal they would need when Jelovac won a loose ball in the box and slipped a shot underneath Wright to the far post. Christoffer Nisser was credited with his second assist of the season on the play.

In the second half, UAlbany almost doubled its lead in the 67th minute. Shortly after Wright stuffed Jeff Pierre's attempt to score, Jelovac unleashed a shot that hit the post. Jankovic attempted to pot the rebound, but Wright made a key save to keep Hartwick (0-5-1) in the match. Anchored by seniors David Burke and Ian Peach, the Great Dane defense, however, kept its opponent off the scoreboard for the sixth time in the last seven halves to help preserve the team's second straight 1-0 victory.

Foncette, who is leading all America East Conference goalkeepers in saves per game for the second straight season, turned away six of the 18 shots he faced to earn his third shutout of the season and eighth of his career in the winning effort. Hartwick's Wright made five saves on 13 chances and suffered the loss.

UAlbany (4-2) continues its three-game road trip when it visits San Diego on Friday, Sept. 24 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. The Great Danes defeated the Toreros by a 3-0 score when the teams most recently met in California two years ago.

#19 UAlbany Field Hockey Falls to Michigan, 4-3, in Double Overtime; Christina Patrick Scores Twice

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Alicia Mayer scored two goals and assisted Katie Adams' gamewinner to lead Michigan to a 4-3 double overtime win over #19 UAlbany in non-conference field hockey action at Ocker Field on Saturday afternoon.

Mayer gave Michigan a 1-0 advantage in the first half before scoring the second goal of the game to start the second half of play. UAlbany came back firing after halftime, tying the game at 2-2 within two minutes of playing time. Freshman Corrine McConville put the Great Danes on the board on a penalty corner, taking assists from Ashlyn Bach and Christina Patrick to find the back of the net at 50:33. Just 1:36 later, Patrick tied the game up, as Nina Walters dribbled down the right side and sent a crossing pass to Patrick, who redirected the ball into the cage.

Rachel Mack put the Wolverines back on top in the 56th minute, taking an assist from Mayer. In the final minute of play, Patrick scored her second goal of the game to tie the score at 3-3. Patrick collected a rebound in front of the cage and slipped the ball past Michigan goalkeeper Haley Jones to send the game to overtime.

The teams played a scoreless first extra period to send the game into another 10 minutes of action. Mayer sent a long pass across the circle to find Adams, who used a reverse-stick shot to score the game-winning tally in the 93rd minute of play.

Michigan (3-4) outshot UAlbany, 23-13, including 6-0 in the second overtime, and held a 10-8 advantage in penalty corners. UAlbany goalkeepers Christine Hoffman and Kristi Troch combined for five saves, while Jones stopped two shots for the Wolverines.
