University of Albany's Alex Leuchanka and Laura Cummings Garner America East Track & Field Weekly Awards - UAlbany Sports 2010


Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Alex Leuchanka and Laura Cummings earned America East Conference Track and Field weekly honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, April 6. Leuchanka was named the men's track performer of the week, while Cummings earned women's track performer of the week accolades.

Leuchanka, a freshman from Clifton Park, N.Y., won the men's 10,000-meter run in 30:44.22 at the Duke Invitational last weekend. He outdistanced the second-place finisher from Pittsburgh by over 11 seconds to qualify for the IC4A Championship. The time is an America East Conference best this season by over two minutes. In addition, the mark ranks 65th overall and 10th among freshmen nationally, plus is 37th overall and seventh among freshmen in the East Region.

Cummings, a senior from Bay Shore, N.Y., placed first in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:38.43 at Duke, edging the second-place finisher from North Carolina State by .48 seconds to qualify for the ECAC Championship. Her time ranks first among America East student-athletes this season. Cummings is also one of just two student-athletes in the league to break the 11-minute mark in the event along with teammate Jenn Pierson. In addition, the senior's time ranks 18th in the nation and eighth in the East Region.

The UAlbany outdoor track and field programs will compete at the UMass Invitational, a nine-team scoring meet, on Saturday, April 10 at 11:30 a.m.
