Two Throwers and One Relay Eclipse IC4A Standards Before Record Crowd at Penn Relays


Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Wilfredo de Jesus Elias and senior captain Will Anger qualified for the IC4A Championship in the men's hammer throw to lead UAlbany before a record crowd at the 116th Annual Penn Relays on Saturday, April 24 at Franklin Field. The men's 4x100-meter relay ran a qualifying time for the postseason competition in May to cap the weekend.

de Jesus Elias, the school's record holder in the hammer throw, finished seventh in the college division by registering a mark of 185-feet, 4-inches. Anger recorded a season-best toss that sailed 173-1, placing 17th in the same section.

UAlbany also had two men's relays compete on the final afternoon of the three-day carnival. The 4x100-meter relay consisting of Jake Rachiele, Germain Smith, Earnest Waters and Taylor Chaney navigated the track in 42.03 seconds to finish sixth. Anchored by freshman Sean Halpin, who ran a 1:51.9 split on the final leg of yesterday's sprint medley relay for the Great Danes, the 4xMile relay team placed 13th in 16:54.02. Tyler Fogarty, Paul Lagno and John Moore also ran on the relay.

UAlbany will host the Friendship Meet and compete against Jamaica's University of Technology on Monday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. in its final tuneup before next weekend's America East Conference Championships.

Paw Prints: Saturday's festivities attracted 54,310 fans, setting a new one-day attendance record ... The previous high of 50,827 was recorded in 2002 ... The event also drew 117,346 spectators over the three days, which was also a record ... A total of 114,194 fans attended the carnival in 2006.
