University of Albany Women Lacrosse's Christine Grueniger Named America East Conference Defender of the Week - UAlbany Sports 2010


Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Christine Grueniger has been chosen America East Conference Defensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse, as announced today by the conference office. She also won the weekly defensive award last April.

Grueniger, a senior attack/midfielder from Lindenhurst, N.Y., matched a career-high with six ground balls and scored three times in last Saturday's 24-2 victory over Niagara. The Great Danes set the program's Division I single-game scoring record. She also had two draw controls and caused one turnover. Grueniger totaled two goals and one assist in her team's season-opening defeat against Hofstra, a 17-14 decision, on March 1.

Grueniger moved to 11th on the school's all-time list with 69 career goals. A starter in 40 of 50 games played as a collegian, she needs 16 points to reach the 100-career mark.

Paw Prints: UAlbany's Melanie Sosnowski established the program's single-game record with eight goals against Niagara, plus tied another standard with 10 points ... Sosnowski tallied five of her team's opening seven goals ... Kayla Best extended her goal-scoring streak to 48 consecutive games, the nation's second-longest mark .. Best, a senior midfielder, has moved to fourth in career goals (124) and fifth in career points (152) among the program's all-time leaders ... the Great Danes travel to crosstown-rival Siena on Friday, March 12 at 3:00 p.m.
