University of Albany Freshman Guard Mike Black Named to America East Conference All-Rookie Basketball Team - UAlbany Sports 2010


West Hartford, Conn. - University at Albany's Mike Black has been named to the 2009-10 America East Conference All-Rookie Team in men's basketball, as announced on Friday, March 5 by the conference office. Billy Allen was voted to the conference's all-academic basketball squad.

Black, a freshman guard from Chicago, Ill., averaged 6.8 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds, plus shot 43.7 percent from the three-point arc and 75 percent from the line. A starter in 21 of 30 games played, he ranks 10th among the conference assists leaders.

Black, who averaged 10.4 points and 3.4 assists against America East opponents, has scored in double figures on 10 occasions. He had a career-high 18 points against both Binghamton (Jan. 7) and Boston University (Feb. 6). Black handed out a career-best nine assists against Stony Brook on Feb. 19, the highest total by a UAlbany player in four seasons.

UAlbany has produced six players who have been chosen to the America East All-Rookie Team. The list includes Jamar Wilson (2003), Levi Levine (2003), Jon Iati (2004), Brent Wilson (2005) and Tim Ambrose (2008).

Allen, a sophomore guard/forward from Hamilton, Ohio, has a 3.38 cumulative grade point average in a dual major of physics and mathematics. Allen, who is averaging 3.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 29 appearances this season, overcame back surgery as a true freshman in 2007-08. He scored a career-high 21 points against Yale in early January. Allen is one of two students on UAlbany's Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Board (IAAB) and is the school's representative to the America East Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Paw Prints: UAlbany meets America East regular-season winner Stony Brook in the conference tournament's quarterfinal round at the University of Hartford's Chase Family Arena on Saturday, March 6 at 12 noon ...
