University of Albany Volleyball's Laurie Gonzalez Selected to Play for U.S. Women's National A2 Team - UAlbany Sports 2010


Colorado Springs, Colo. - University at Albany's Laurie Gonzalez has been selected by USA Volleyball as one of 24 players for the U.S. Women's National A2 Program for 2010.

Gonzalez, who completed her second season with the Great Danes in the fall, repeated as the America East Conference Defensive Specialist of the Year, after leading UAlbany to its second straight regular-season title. Gonzalez, who was also a member of the National A2 Program in 2009, was an all-conference second team selection after leading the league and ranking 35th nationally in digs, averaging 4.95 per set. She was also among the league leaders in service aces. Gonzalez recorded double-digit digs in 22 of 24 matches played, including a career-high 31 against Colgate.

The 2010 U.S. Women's National A2 program is scheduled to train May 24-28 in Tempe, Ariz., before being split into two 12-player rosters to compete in the Open Division of the 2010 USA Open National Championships held in nearby Phoenix. The Open Division flight takes place May 29-June 1 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Additional information on the tournament can be found at www.usavolleyball.org/events/2245.

The 2010 U.S. Women's National A2 Team includes four setters, 10 outside/opposite hitters, six middles and four liberos. The 24 players come from 18 different collegiate programs. The players, all of whom have remaining collegiate eligibility for 2010, were selected as part of the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 19-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A record total of 175 athletes competed in the Open Tryout.
