Albany, N.Y. - Former University at Albany All-America lacrosse attackman Merrick Thomson has been named to the Team Canada roster for the 2010 FIL World Championships, held on July 15-24 in Manchester, England. Canada won the gold medal when the World Championships were last contested in 2006.
Thomson, a 26-year-old native of Stoney Creek, Ontario, is UAlbany's all-time scoring leader with 244 points (188 goals, 56 assists) and ranks first in career goals. He was named to the USILA All-America third team as a senior when he led the Great Danes to the 2007 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Thomson was voted to the All-America East Conference squad four times, including a pair of first-team selections.
"Representing my country is a huge honor and it is something I have always wanted to be a part of," said Thomson, a Capital Region high school standout at Albany Academy. "I am excited to be playing with my teammates from the Major League Lacrosse champion Toronto Nationals. We have good chemistry and a locker room filled with quality individuals. Canada is looking for gold and I hope to help the team in any way possible."
Thomson led the Toronto Nationals to a dramatic 10-9 victory over top-seed Denver Outlaws in the 2009 MLL championship last August. He was named the MLL Playoff MVP after netting two second-half goals. He also scored four times, including the game-winner, in his team's semifinal win over Long Island.
A two-time first-team All-MLL selection and the league's most improved player in 2008, Thomson began his professional outdoor career with the New Jersey Pride. As an indoor player, the left-hander was drafted in the first round (second pick overall) by the National Lacrosse League's Philadelphia Wings.
