West Point, N.Y. - Kadine Johnson won both women's throwing events and Wilfredo de Jesus Elias and Freddie Wills claimed the men's weight throw and heptathlon titles, respectively, to highlight the UAlbany indoor track and field teams' performance at the Carleton Crowell Open on Jan. 8-9. The two-day competition was being held at Army's Gillis Field House.
Johnson qualified for the ECAC championship by shattering her own school record in the weight throw with a winning mark of 55-feet, 8.25-inches, breaking her previous standard of 55-1 registered at last year's Great Dane Classic. She also won the shot put with a toss that sailed 40-0.50.
Wills, who was the America East decathlon champion last spring, finished with 4,807 points in the heptathlon and qualified for the IC4A championship. He won the long jump with a mark of 22-10, the high jump for clearing 6-7 and the 60-meter high hurdles in 8.64. In addition, Wills tied for first in the 60-meter dash for crossing the tape in 7.34.
de Jesus Elias, who holds the program standard in the weight throw, qualified for the IC4A championship in the event with his winning mark of 58-1.25. The distance was almost six feet better than the second-place mark.
Rounding out the list of top-three finishers for the Great Danes were Ashley Lewis and Karley Giles, who posted second-place finishes in the women's shot put and high jump, respectively. Lewis posted a mark of 39-10, while Giles cleared 5-1. Giles, a Suburban Council All-Star on the scholastic level, also placed sixth in the pentathlon with 2,472 points.
